Shannondale and Beyond and the Friends of Shannondale Springs entered into an Agreement with the Jefferson County Historical Landmarks Committee outlining our responsibilities and giving us permission to maintain the areas where the former resort existed. A copy of this License Agreement is attached here.
With Winter approaching, professional and amateur astronomers alike in the northern hemisphere look forward to this time of year because of it's excellent stargazing opportunities. The reason is that, as the Earth travels around the sun, it 'wobbles,' which causes the Earth to 'tilt' and thus is responsible for our seasons. That tilt, in the Winter, allows us to look deeper into our own spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy, whereas during the summer, the tilt gives us a field of view that...

A fabulous tribute to our website founder and mountain historian, Willis E. Nowell, from an old friend, Mr Tom McDermott at his Celebration of Life April 1, 2017. One day, Willis decided to get a tattoo. This is the story of that fateful day. What in the world am I thinking? Standing in front of Slowpoke's Tattoo Parlor in Ranson, I asked that question. We'll chalk it up to a mental aberration. Tats, Tats, and more Tats. Should I get a nekkid woman on my chest? Nuh uh, just a few small spots to cover smaller spots that the pretty ladies at the radiation clinic in Winchester already tattooed on my poor bod. Those are the specks they indelibly...
Today, November 9, 2016, reminds me of a day back in late 1970s when I raised chickens, organically for us to eat and some to sell. I had probably 50-75 birds that were nearly ready to take in for processing. I came home from my part-time job at a dentist's office and when I drove in my barnyard, I saw slaughtered chickens and ducks everywhere. They weren't eaten, only killed. The ones that were left were dazed, in shock and never laid an egg again nor could I even begin to think about...
REPOST Conversion. Originally posted by Tony on April 6, 2007. I've finally started on the task of scanning these old newsletters. I thought I would pause here and get feedback. First, know that the pages must be scanned in bunches; I cannot stick all 500 pages into the scanner at once. At most it holds maybe 20 pages per run. Each run comes out of post-formatting with numerical date names which I've been changing to year and month of the newsletter. e.g.: 1980 August.pdf 1980 May.pdf...
In 2007 a trip to the once world renown resort, Shannondale Springs, occurred. Participants made the trip by land and by watercraft to enjoy the natural beauty afforded by the area as well as learn more about the resort, once known as James Monroe's Summer White House. Much more about the Springs can be found on our website.
The First Incarnation In 1886 a few young men*, communicants from Zion Episcopal Church in Charles Town WV, began a Sunday School in a schoolhouse east of the Shenandoah River and southeast of the city. The area was near Mannings, a community at the toe of Jefferson County's Blue Ridge Mountain. The young churchmen's rector, the Rev. Dallas Tucker, was convinced and enlisted to hold services there. Through the efforts of Dr. Tucker and several laymen at Zion, money was raised and in 1889, a...

Those Markers We See So Often They Sometimes Blend Into The Background What are they all about, where are they located throughout our County, and what the heck do they say? Shucks, you never have time to read them when you're driving by.We reckon the best way to describe the the markers would be to borrow the wording from the West Virginia Division of Culture and History's website: The West Virginia Highway Historical Marker Program was initiated in 1937 as part of the New Deal as a way...
