Newcomer House Porch Program South Mountain Artillery August 5 & 6, 2017 As part of the Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area’s (HCWHA) 2017 Porch Program Series, the South Mountain Artillery will conduct cannon firing demonstrations on August 5 and 6 at 11:30 AM and 2:00 PM. The demonstrations will be followed by living historians presenting interpretive talks about Captain John Tidball, Captain of Battery A, 2nd US Artillery, and his U.S. Horse Artillery, who pulled cannons up the steep hill beside the Newcomer House. Volunteer docents will staff the Newcomer House from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM to share knowledge about the Newcomer House and offer assistance to visitors to the three-county Heart of the Civil War Heritage Area. This is the second season of Porch Programs at the Newcomer House, HCWHA’s Exhibit & Visitor Center at Antietam National Battlefield. Visitors of all ages are invited to interact with experts on a variety of Civil War topics, ranging from first aid to family history.
