Young female, just one eye. Very friendly. She wandered up on our back porch, cold and hungry. Wish we could keep her, but we have 2 cats already. Found in area of Johnnycake & Deerfoot. We fed her and have her inside. Let me know if she's yours or if someone can keep her. Thanks!

Any chance for a picture?
Hope she has a home and they get her back. Maybe putting a flyer up by the mailbox places would be a good idea too.
Let us know if there is anything we can do to help.

I'll "try" to post a photo....(if I can figure it out). And I'll put up a flyer at the mailboxes. She is really sweet, and not very old. At least she's not out in the cold now. I think she's used to being inside, although I do have her in a crate, and she seems content with that. I hope we can reunite her with her owner. Thanks.

I would call around to the vets offices in the area.
A one eyed cat seems unusual, so hopefully they would know who the owner is.

Let us know what happens....

What?? Stratus has only TWO cats??!!?? If you reside on the mountain its required that you get at least 6 cats.

So, take in the one-eyed princess. Oh, and if you do then you must acquire 3 additional cats to meet the mountain requirements. :dancecat::dancecat:

I actually saw a 'lost cat' poster today at Greenbriar Pet emergency hospital and resort. It was a B & W cat missing one eye-- - It is all the way in Urbana MD but it is worth a shot!

I will call them now...

The cat in the poster was mostly white, but black too... Name was 'blinker'- not very funny in my opinion... anyway. Blinker's owners may be reached at: 301-758-8063

let me know if you found their cat! Blinker has been missing for quite some time and I always feel sad when I see the poster still up.

Elizabeth, I called the phone number this evening, and the guy who answered said they had just recently found their cat. And it was white, with some black. I told him how I got their number, he was really surprised and really appreciated the phone call. Thanks so much for getting the info from the poster.....it was worth the phone call to see if it was theirs.

I would love to keep her.....I'm a cat person, Hubby is not, so 2 is pushing it. Especially when our number 2 cat was a stray. I think he's afraid I'll try to keep every cat that comes along, and if I could get away with it, I would!

The kitty is living in the basement, putting on some weight....she was skinny when she came here. I'm waiting for a return call from Animal Welfare, to see if anyone made a report to them. I guess I'll take her out there if I can't find the owner, unless anyone knows of someone who might want her. She's really sweet, and purrs really loud. Her coat is getting kind of thick and fluffy. She's mostly black with some white, something like tuxedo. Thanks for your help.

I just spoke with Animal Welfare, and no one has called about a missing cat like this one. And, they do not have room for any more cats. They said I could check with PAWS or Briggs to see if they had room. I never did put up flyers, so now I will do that, in case she belongs to someone who does not see our forum. We'll see what happens.

Aw Willis, that would really be nice, and if you did take her, I'd help with the food. I give my cats dry food and she's perfectly happy with that, I can pick up some food for you when I get mine........sounds like a plan. That was a cute cat picture you put on. I managed to download her 2 photos to computer, but not on here yet.

I haven't checked with Briggs or PAWS yet, don't know if they have room. I also have 3 photo flyers made up. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks so much.

Nice to know the other cat was found... :)

In November a new client asked me to clean their new house for them before they moved in... The old clients had 16 cats and had left one of them. The new clients had taped him up in a box and left him as a point of indignation... Andrew and I brought him home. He has many many medical issues that we are working on, his back and front left side is disabled, and he may have some neurological issues... but we had him shaved and cleaned up-- he visits HILLSIDE VET (yay! Love them!) every other week... but he is sweet and loving and lives in our basement/garage. I knew that no one would ever want him- as it would be difficult to adopt out your cat at a shelter- it's just the way it goes... so I figure he is better off in my basement where it is warm and I give him love...

Kudos to you for helping this kitty... You are a genuinely good person for doing this.

YAY WILLIS!! Take him! One kitty just isn't enough! I have some good tips for acclimating new kitties to each other if you want them!

Hee hee hee. I distinctly remember telling Willis last Fall that cats were like potato chips.

But I don't remember a 6 rule...

If it's ok, I'll call Monday morning and if the owner hasn't materialized, get in contact with a vet and get an appointment for a physical, tests, and the spaying she'll likely need. Then I can pick up kitty and take her directly to the Doc whenever he can arrange to see her. Bunch will adapt- My Mom adapted to me a while back.

We lost a cat for about 18 months when we first moved to Maine...(Technically before we moved, while the house was being built) After we were all moved in and settled he came back.

:) Well, kitty's owner was just overjoyed to see her again after all this time, she gave her lots of hugs and couldn't wait to get her home to family. She could hardly believe that she turned up this far away from home. It's pretty amazing the way this worked out, we were just happy to have been a part of the happy reunion. Thanks to all of you for helping, thanks to Amarie128 for making the connection, and thanks to you, Willis, for your willingness to take her into your home to live with you and Bunch.

Sadness, adventure, thrills, danger, love, loss, adversity, elation, handicaps yadda, yadda, the story oozes pathos. We have the capability for a writer to pen the story here on this very website. Maybe a first person adventure-thru Kitty's Eye. Can we get amarie128 to get some more information from the owner? I reread the thread- I couldn't find our heroine/protagonist's name, even. The details are missing that would flesh out the story.

It wouldn't have to be a novel- Just a short story that a newspaper could could print as a guest column. Send it to not only the Spirit and the Journal but to the burgs over the ridge where the kitty originally went missing. It seems pretty obvious (not surprisingly) that no one thought to place an advert on the west side of the hill.

I'd say go for it. Some wordsmith, with the owner's and Stratus' help, could conceive a thrilling tail tale. I'll bet we've even got an English Lit professor who would help.:whistling:

Amarie128

I emailed cnn to try and get the story out yesterday as soon as I realized it was a match. I haven't heard anything back yet.
The kitty's mom is Darcy Swope. She is an art teacher at the Potomac School and sells her art as well. She has a cat sanctuary based in her home, which I clean for her. She currently has 49 cats that live in her house and sometimes venture outside on her huge spread of land in Hillsboro. All of the cats she takes in have some sort of handicap or were older when she took them in. These characteristics tend to make cats harder to place in homes from shelters, but she is always willing to take them in. Though 49 cats in one home might sound like a hoarder and you may think the worst, she has meticulous records for all of the cats...when they need vaccines, check ups, grooming, whatever. She knows all of their names and takes wonderful care of each and every one of them. I work at an animal shelter and have to say that she takes better care of 49 cats than some people (most of whom I meet at work) can take care of one cat. I truly hope her story goes public for many reasons. Its a fantastic and heart warming story and it also might help generate donations for her sanctuary. She pays for all the food, litter, vet care and everything out of her own money. She rarely gets donations. She is an amazing person!

Willis
02-08-2009, 07:17 PM
...is to generate some awareness that though we have a State boundary, ridge line and the Nation's Longest Nat'l Park between usin's and Round Hill, Purcellville, Hillsboro etc, pets rarely read maps. Some of the stories in the thread and in countless others have tales of animals straying from state to state. I want folks on both sides of the hill to be aware of our lost and found forum and any similar venture over yonder.

So A128, the mods of this forum and someone who can spin a yarn, concertrate on not letting this drop. As for Ms. Swope, and knowing the dogged(pun) effort you put forth to recover your dogs, I trust the assessment of the cats-but wowser, 49? The lady needs all the help she can get. Publicity, local or Nat'l with a positive spin, may get her some.

If only I would have contacted Loudoun Co Animal Control/Shelter, I would have known sooner where kitty belonged, because Darcy had reported her missing to them. Like Willis said, pets don't pay attention to state lines.

Kitty's name is TLC, because that was what she needed when Darcy got her. She was from a feral colony and she had one eye then. She said she may have to change her name after this.

Darcy makes beautiful note cards w/envelopes! When I told her I didn't want anything for taking care of "TLC", she brought me 2 sets of note cards that she had made. One has original photos of "Cats in Baskets and Boxes" (really cute), and the other some of her original artwork (very nice). That was so nice of her. I intend to make some kind of donation --- maybe she has a Wish List of things she needs.

She's going to keep me updated with TLC's return to "plumpness" and email photos.

And Amarie is right - Darcy is an amazing person.

Where is she in H.B.? I've never heard of the place, which seems unusual, since I live in Loudoun Co, and sleep in WV! :)

Sounds like a cool lady! We need to contact the DC news stations, that would probably get more immediate response...I think?

::EDIT POST::
I was just thinking, maybe we should check with this lady, and coordinate any contact with news media with her. When word gets out she could become swamped with dumped kittys! She's obviously carved out a niche (hard to place kids), and helps as many as she can...we don't want this to turn into a CATastrophe! Just a thought...

Amarie128
02-09-2009, 07:10 AM
I was just thinking, since we have such a wide variety of professionals as an audience. Is there anyone out there that has some pull with a local veterinarian that could give Darcy a price break? She used to live in McLean and has been unable to find a vet willing to give her a break that is closer to Hillboro. So in order to still get a reduced bill she has to take the kitties all the way out to McLean. She has tried a couple in Purcellville, Leesburg and I think WV but no one is willing to give a break. She recently got two kitties spayed and it cost her $400 each cat! That's alot of money for anyone. And she is obviously a good customer that will always need vet care and often.

Girlyjeep
02-09-2009, 07:33 AM
Norma the vet (owner) does the neutering for the Jefferson County Animal Shelter. I'm sure they get a break on price.
She may qualify for a break too, especially since she is a non-profit organization.

Marty
02-09-2009, 09:24 AM
For spay/neuter, I work with Spay Today at Briggs. Their vouchers for spay/neuter, rabies, distemper shots, and other services depend on individual VA/WV vet discounts given to them, but they are way cheaper than spaying @$200/cat. You can check out prices under Spay Today on their website: http://www.baacs.org/

Spay Today also may be able to provide info on clinics for spay/neuter, rabies, etc.

p.s. Briggs has an amazing state-of-the-art cattery, it's great to visit.

Amarie128
02-09-2009, 09:33 AM
It wasn't $200 for each cat, she paid $400 for each cat. I think that is ridiculous. I work for Loudoun Animal Shelter and we pay $77 for a cat spay and $56 for a cat neuter. So vets could work with her, they are just being greedy. Most of the time the cats are spayed or neutered before she gets them. Her big cost is for the vaccines, Revolution for the ear mites when that happens and the regular check ups. The most recent cat she acquired had a cleft lip/pallette which caused her to not be able to nurse as a kitten. Something like that could get expensive to repair. I think a vet could reduce or waive the exam fee and maybe just charge for the meds or vaccines.

Marty
02-09-2009, 09:49 AM
oh, i must've misread $400 each cat on purpose, because that's unbelievable! anyway, all the more reason to talk to Spay Today and check out the vaccine prices, etc. - they can at least help some.

Marty
02-09-2009, 09:57 AM

Does it really cost you near $100 for each female? That could get onerous.

Marty
02-09-2009, 03:56 PM
You're right, it's onerous when you start dealing with multiple cats. But a lot cheaper than regular prices, as per Amarie's post about $400 per cat (!). Blue Ridge is more expensive than some other vets used by Spay Today, so it's good to check the whole price list.

I like Blue Ridge not only because of their high-quality care but also because they have long hours and are on my commuting route.
