When?
The letter I have is a little confusing...I see three possible dates.
Does anyone remember if kindergarten orientation is the same day as the first day of school for the rest of the kids?
I just did this last year but I'm drawing a blank!
Thanks in advance.

Wed. the 26th is when V starts. It's private, but supposedly on the same schedule as public. Can't help you on kindergarten orientation though.

My daughter is going into Kindergarten as well this year. Orientation is on the first day (the 26th). I talked to the school today and the teacher is supposed to call this week to setup a time (she is going to page jackson). Their first full day is thursday the 27th.

Thanks.
So my oldest starts on the 26th and my youngest goes to orientation on the 26th.
Perfect. Didn't last year start in September? Ugh, the 26th is too close!

WV has always started prior to Labor Day (at least since my kids have been going here).
Hard to believe summer is already over- where did it go. And how on earth did I end up with 2 kids in middle school already??? it can't be

Yep, 26th.
I still can't believe they would have the County Fair be the week that schoool starts. They should have scheduled it for THIS week. Odd.

I do remember this now...But having only 1 year under my belt I forgot.
Maine is the same way...I don't get it...Why the 2 days of school and then the long weekend? Is there a reason?
And that does seem crappy that the fair is the same week school starts. Maybe they take tourism into account more than residents? Or maybe they just assume people will come out due to the long weekend?
I can't believe how fast summer went. Woooosh!

Labor Day weekend is not until Sept 4-7. So the kids will be in school for 8 days prior to their first 3 day weekend. (instead of the normal 3 days, then long weekend. )
And I agree about the Fair too. It would have been nice to have it this week. I belive the family night actually falls on the first day of school. I could be wrong though, I don't have a schedule handy.
I think Mon and Wed are family days.

And I agree about the Fair too. It would have been nice to have it this week. This was incredibly poor planning on someone's part; maybe both organizations screwed it up. Whether a rule or not, the Fair seems to always be the 3rd full week in August; this year it's the 4th. It also seems odd that JCPS would have kids back in classrooms a week-and-a-half before Labor Day Weekend, when in the past it's only been a half-week. Was this a case of two organizations not considering a calendar oddity (Labor Day was this late more than ten years ago and regularly hits September 7th every 4-5 years) and/or not considering the other? I've heard before that there isn't a true County Scheduling Calendar - perhaps there should be...
It would seem to be more than just a minor inconvenience: Just a casual observation at the Fair reveals that many of the (livestock) exhibits are entered by school-age children who will be unable to properly care for their animals from Wednesday through Friday. And, since the rules explicitly prohibit removal of exhibits prior to the last day, even that isn't an option.
And, what about the vendors who rely on a full week of business? I suppose that it's possible that those without children might still come on the school days/nights, but it doesn't take an economics degree to predict that this year there will be a decrease in revenue.
I belive the family night actually falls on the first day of school. I could be wrong though, I don't have a schedule handy. My step-daughter pointed out that there are actually TWO Family Nights on the Fair schedule - one on Monday night and one of Wednesday night.

I always liked the fair being the first full week of school and the planning does not seem screwed up to me at all given the number of bands, choruses, etc that perform at the fair along with all of the entries from students who participate in the various school clubs like FFA, FHA, etc.....
Not to mention it was a good time to socialize and get reacquainted before the school year actually began.
I didn't even think about the animal exhibits and judging and the kids being in school. Doesn't really make sense.

Is it me, or did this not make sense?! Don't you mean that the planning of the school opening during the week of the fair IS screwed up?
