The total number of defoliated acres in WV from gypsy moth caterpillars in 2009 was 44,281. Fortunately for us, there were no defoliated acres in Jefferson County in 2009. Monroe County had 21,193 defoliated acres, Greenbrier 19,798, Pendleton 2,490, Pocahontas 704, and Hardy 96.

Although the number of defoliated acres in the state is significantly less than it was in 2008, it is still considerably more than it was in 2006
In 2006 there were 17,272 defoliated acres in WV, in 2007 it jumped to 78,000, and in 2008 it increased even more to 81,000. Hopefully the numbers will drop in 2010 as they did in 2009.

The SGMC has applied for the annual egg mass survey of Shannondale, River View Park and John Brown Farm and we should know the results no later than the end of November 2009. The results will be posted on this forum as soon as we know them. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed toward gypsy moth treatment and given support in other ways.
