We are trying to make the mountain a better, safer place to live. The purpose of the training at this point is to show use better ways of observing, recording and reporting what is going on - improve our skills. There will be manyother events/activities planned for the coming months. We are also trying to promote better community spirit.

I don't think "recording" in this case means videotaping. I believe they are talking about keeping track of things and recording it as in writing it down.

KittyKat, please take the time to search either Mountain Watch or Neighborhood watch on this site -- our purpose and objectives have been clearly stated numerous times.

Neighborhood Watch (in this case Mountain Watch) is a widespread program. It is not a "let's get the teenagers" program. Why is it that no matter what is said/done around here teenagers seem to think it is a direct attempt to "get them"?

I know many people in many states and they all have Neighborhood Watch programs. They are not out to get teenagers. They are out to get criminals. This program is the same thing.

"Someone please get this child a dictionary."

or at least teach him/her how to use spell check.

"Why is it that no matter what is said/done around here teenagers seem to think it is a direct attempt to "get them"?"

Maybe it's their guilty consciences or the typical teenage misconception that the entire world revolves around them.

Mountain watch is to get criminals, and protect our homes/community/environment.

Haven't you heard? ALL teens are criminals. They're guilty.

People, please keep the integrity of Mountain Watch in your minds when creating or participating in banter of this kind....It is totally counter productive...

Please read to understand the Mountain Watch Objectives http://www.shannondale.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1930

To Kitty - as Mountain Watch Organiser - let me assure you that Mountain Watch is not about being A-holes to local teens, its about neighbors taking care of neighbors. Keeping an eye out for predators and opportunists that want to take advantage of our neighborhood and conduct criminal activity around our homes, on us or to our neighbors.

I too believe that all-in-all our mountain is a safe place - however - houses were broken into on christmas eve this year, cars have been stolen, and people have been held-up/robbed, we have had arson, and vandalism occur in our neighborhoods at an increasing rate.

I would think that if your stuff got stolen you would want to know who did it? Wouldnt you like your neighbors to report something that might lead to them finding the person or maybe have even stoped the action before it occurred? This is what Mountain Watch is all about - neighbors taking care of neighbors, keeping an eye out, and then reporting and recording suspicious activity...

Mountain Watch is also about getting to know your neighbors...

The Recording part is about keeping details, writing it on a piece of paper, taking a picture if necessary, and filing a report....

Why make a big deal about training?
It is important for people to know what to look for, and what kinds of behavior can be indicators of potential criminal activity....It is about educating people on not sterotyping...It is also important for people to understand what details are of importance when reporting and recording.

Teenagers know more about what is really going on then most of the rest of us...you see and hear more and are often directly impacted by the negative activities that criminals bring to the community - I would hope given the opportunity that you too would like to keep the neighborhood safe, and keep the bad guys away - which makes us all want the same thing.

Feel free to email me directly with any questions.

ANY ADULT READING THIS - Dont forget what it was like being a teenager!...please behave as an adult...be a role model...
