We went to see a solar/green house in Berkeley Springs, the guys from the Solar & Wind Company are an awsome group of guys. The 1800 sqft house had solar hot water, solar PV (which runs parts of the house and can get your electrical meter running backwards) as well as a wind turbine.

Anyhow we got a whole lot of good information, and one of the easiest places to start going Solar is with a Solar Hot Water Heater. Currently the Feds give you a credit for 30% of cost (no limit) and WV is giving up to 2K in credits - which could essentially get you started for around 4K investment (after credits). There are also these other energy type credits that can work into a positive cash flow - WV is actually ahead of VA in regards to energy credits which was spearheaded by this company.

MY MAIN POINT - if we have enough interest these guys would come and give a presentation on what can be done in the solar & wind turbine arena, as it applies to our homes, they have costs analysis done and are truley genuine in their environmental persuit.

SO WHO WOULD BE INTERESTED!

On a side note the Habitat house being built this week in M'burg (which my hubby does every year) will have a solar hot water system installed in it :-)

Definantely. I'll arrange my schedule to be able to attend. I need a new heat pump ASAP and am ready to drop some $$ into a new energy efficient system. Can I get them up to my house. Unfortunately, just two years ago i replaced the hot water heater, and although efficent is not green.

I dont know what they are using for a 'green' HVAC system and if thats something they do??? You should give them a call....

Solar Hot Water Systems for most people is usually the first place to start mainly because your hot water heater is one of the least efficient appliances around, Solar Hot Water technology has been around a very, very, very long time and is a tried and true technology, and its the cheapest of the systems to install.

I will contact the company and arrange a time, place for a demonstration/meeting...I'll keep you all posted.

FYI - testing for Solar Viability is a pretty quick and efficient process, there is a light meter of sorts that they use which will measure how much sun and energy production is likely to be produced, which takes the guess work out of whether solar is a good choice or not and the correct location for the panels.

Thank you Ozgirl. I'll contact the company ref. HVAC. Sear's is coming out tomorrow to do a free no obligation in home consultation. No payments, no interest, up to $1,500 tax credit.
