I almost get nailed at the top of G1 because SOMEONE can't freakin' read the STOP SIGN at the top of the hill on Red Bird before heading down the hill!!!
C'MON PEOPLE!!!
Thank you Mr. "I'm in a hurry and don't have to obey the law" in the burgundy Kia.... Got yer plate... Have a day.

A burgundy KIA, ehhhhhh. HEY! I have one of those. Are you sure the person driving wasn't the person who lives in my house and refuses to recognize that the marriage certificate is invalid?????

Was not me... I was down at Gate 4 this morning getting the kids on the bus and have had the car parked in the garage since 7:40 am this morning.
Oh, yeah and I always stop at the stop sign at the top of the Gate 1 hill. It also pisses me off when others don't do it. It also pisses me off when people use the side lane at the bottom of Gate 1 as an exit ramp onto Mission by yielding or accelerating instead of coming to a complete stop. I can't tell you how many times I've come around that corner on Mission and had people just pull right out in front of me without stopping.

EXACTLY - Oh I knew it wasn't you, cos you're not a dude! LOL
And yes, yer absolutely right - people FLY around the top corner to come down w/o stopping. - And if you're coming UP the hill, forget it, it's a head on waiting to happen.
And too many people use that side lane as a speed off - they NEVER stop.
I always see people STOPPED on that side lane, like PARKED there - at some point, someone's not going to see them and it's going to be a bad situation.
I feel like there should be one of those reflective strips placed on the pole for the stop sign, like they have at the end of Mission. There's just too much traffic now to not stop.
I have dubbed that intersection the "All About ME" place.

Didn't that stop sign use to say "STOP Except turning Right"? Then someone tore the Except turning right down.

Yup, but because of the problems, it was changed.
It's a straight up stop sign.
It was changed when they put in the extra side lane in on the bottom.
People THINK that it's still that way, but that's not the case now, and hasn't been for quite some time.

EVERYDAY, I feel like I'm about to get hit turning left onto Red Bird from G1, b/c NO ONE ever stops!!!! I ALWAYS stop! and I STOP at the G1/Mission Road too. It really irks me when people use the sidelane as a ramp to Mission too. I feel your pain!

thats nothing. try coming up gate 1 and turning into the first driveway on red bird. people are in such a hurry that i get scared whenever someone is behind me. after they almost hit me, they look at me like its my fault.
Didn't that stop sign use to say "STOP Except turning Right"? .
Is WV or Jefferson County the only place this exist? Although it might be safer then MI where you can make a left at red lights when they are flashing... after coming to a "stop".

It's not quite the same, but several malls in Northern VA have entrance traffic signs that say "Keep Moving" for incoming traffic, i.e. incoming traffic doesn't stop to turn right or left.
Somebody I used to work with swore there was an intersection in his hometown that was so poorly designed, there was a sign at one approach that said "Left Turn ON RED ONLY", and that it made complete sense for that intersection.

In Iowa, we had these things called uncontrolled intersections.
They were in standard residential areas in cities. I didn't like it one bit. Not only did you need to be observant of if you have a stop sign, you have to be observant as to whether the cross street has one or not.

Kinda like the "Three Churches" intersection? There is only one stop sign, which only helps in one sort of potential accident. The day someone coming down Chestnut turning left while someone else is going up Hostler....
Who the fart decided where the stop sign belonged up in there?

If you look at the intersection on a map, hostler ends at Chestnut Hill. Chestnut Hill is the thru street, even though it curves thru the intersection. It makes sense.

I almost get nailed at the top of G1 because SOMEONE can't freakin' read the STOP SIGN at the top of the hill on Red Bird before heading down the hill!!!My favorite morons are the ones who cut their left turn onto Gate 1 from Mission Road - regardless of the fact that they're cutting (severely) into outbound Gate 1, risking a head-on with cars turning left from Gate 1 onto Mission.

Yup that one gets me too...
I've almost had my front end taken off a couple times because of that.

Does anyone else get nervous turning left from Lower Clubhouse to Shannondale? I know it is difficult to see if your at the stop sign trying to make the right onto Lower Clubhouse, but it is a stop sign. Sometimes, I feel like I really have to swing down the incline just to keep from being hit in the driver's side door.

As a frequent user of Gate 1 Rd (yes, I live off of Gate 1) I might be able to provide some additional insight.
1.) Traffic often comes flying up Johnson's Curve, which necessitates using the gate 1 "ramp" as an acceleration lane. Keep in mind visibility to the left of Gate 1 onto Mission is limited... and if cars are going at a good clip, which they usually are, there is very little time and distance before they reach Gate 1 Rd. (or are riding the ones ass because they started accelerating from Gate 1 Rd, or halfway up the ramp, where I might add, they can get a clear view of the Mission Rd. below).
2.) If one stops AT the actual stop sign at Gate 1, visibility to the left is almost non-existent. Even if people are stopping at the sign, people coming up Mission Rd likely cannot even see the car until they reach the intersection anyhow.
What's odd to me is that when I spent a year or so dropping my daughter off in the Gate 2 area in the mornings, I found that make a left from Gate 1 onto Mission is yet even more treacherous. So much so, that I ended up taking Johnnycake all the way down instead.

I was about to post the same things.. it is definitely safer to use the "on ramp" because of how fast people come flying from around that curve. Of course, you definitely have to look out to make sure no one's sitting there, cuz that happens enough...

Let's also rem that the speed limit is 40mph on Mission... Not 55.
There's also the BUS STOP AHEAD sign on the right as you're coming up the hill, not that it's any kind of deterrent.... However, w/ that said...
EVERYONE KNOWS IT'S THERE.... SO WHY NOT BE VIGILANT OF IN & OUT GOING TRAFFIC ;)
(Novel idea, I know... hahaha)
People will always speed until there's an actual deterrent to do so.

The worst thing for me is when I come out of my driveway on Mission Rd. and people come up on me nearly hitting me because they are flying down Mission Rd. so fast.

...... And I'm guessing this thread was moved from NW to GEN, (after it had been there for a while), because my original post of WARNING PEOPLE TO REMEMBER THERE'S A STOP SIGN AT GATE ONE was eventually turned into a discussion of different traffic patterns...
HOWEVER.... There were several key posts in there by members of places to WATCH FOR TRAFFIC...
(Normally, as a courtesy, when threads are posted in a separate area, there's a reasoning behind it given by the mod that changed it. Normally, Willini does that. Dunno who did it this go-round... Just sayin'...)
I actually got honked at by the car behind me for stopping at the stop sign you mention Str1ker! I'll never cease to be amazed at reckless drivers. What are they thinking?
Man oh man, people need to relax and follow the rules of the road.

At that point, I'd've gotten out of my car and pointed to the stop sign.
I honk and point when people run it, (and almost run into me)...

One other thing...
I've noticed as of late that people stop whilst going UP the hill on G1...
Folks, you have the RIGHT OF WAY WHEN GOING UPHILL...
Hence the reason for the stop signs on both sides of traffic at the TOP.
I really hate to think of G1 on a snowy day w/ people trying to get down, (which is in itself great WV entertainment), while someone tries to stop while goin' UP the hill....
Can we say CLUSTERSCREW?

Wow - that is a whole new way to look at it! I've been the subject of that entertainment on more than one occassion... Of course I was not entertained while this was going on... mostly praying ! :D
I still can't believe that time I lost it going down the hill and was left then right then left again and nosed inbetween 2 parked cars there on the left... I just knew I was gonna hit either that telephone pole or one of those cars. Prayer works! :D

I honestly think it's so they don't get whacked by people NOT stopping before they just fly around the freakin' corner, and cutting it wide...
WbyGodWV
10-26-2009, 07:30 PM
You really have to cut wide coming in too... almost straight across at the top then left. And can't tell you how many times I've been approaching that stop sign to leave S-Dale and had whoever it was coming in nearly take of my front cutting that corner onto redbird.
I've had someone pass me to... going up the hill of Gate 1 to get on Redbird. I must not have been going fast enough. :D
