NOTE: I've put all the library posts together in one thread-At least all of them I could. Here's Our Asst. Librarian's post that prompted me to put all this in one place. Made sense to me:D
Special Request from Wormie, Assistant Librarian This probably belongs in the Help section, but I'm hoping more folks see it here...
One of the library things we'd like to provide is a sort of bookmobile kinda thing. I mean, once we get all the books on a spreadsheet, we'll print out a list by genre or author, and folks that are homebound (due to illness, age, whatever), we can provide them with a list, they can let us know what books/movies they'd like to borrow, and a volunteer can drive the selections up to them and then pick them up when they are done with them.
So, my request is two-fold:
1) If you know of someone (a neighbor, friend, etc) that might benefit from this, please pm me or email me with their name and mailing address and phone number if possible (with their permission, of course)....then as soon as a list is ready, I can send it to them.
2) If this service takes off, if those folks who wouldn't mind dropping off and picking up books (to their neighborhood area, whatever...flying by the seat of my pants here) could let me know they'd be willing to help out? This would be an occasional thing...not much of a time commitment....
Anyways, thanks in advance!

Anyone have a vhs tape rewinder that they no longer want/need? If so, our new lil' library could use it.
Please let me know asap. Thanks!!!!

You need a VHS tape player - that would also rewind?Actually, it's better for the tapes to be rewound by a dedicated rewinder. Radio Shack *used* to carry such a device - perhaps a trip to the one near Wal-Mart might be fruitful... If they don't have one, perhaps the Store Manager can put the word out to other stores.

I have one at the house! It's yours.
Actually, it's better for the tapes to be rewound by a dedicated rewinder. I disagree. Some high end rewinders had brakes, but none of the cheaper ones did. They would just rewind at full speed and completely ignore the leader and slam into the end of the tape at full speed.
OTOH, vcr's all had 'brakes' - photocells that sensed when the clear leader came up and stopped the rewind before a lot of tension was applied at the end. In theory, anyway.

In practice, I never had a tape damaged by a rewinder. I wish I could say the same thing about those I've rewound in a VCR. Must be they needed a "brake job", eh? ;)

Really pretty much anytime it's convenient for you guys. Or if you're out and about and want to drop it off at MCC during the Sunday market, Peg n' Bubba or Black Dog or some of the other vendors will take it for ya and drop it in the library.
Again, Wormie smooches to you and D.

It's not looking good for a November 1st Grand Opening. While I did my best Friday and Saturday putting in a full day of work (7:30am-6pm), I was just too pooped to make it past 1pm on Sunday. A big thanks to Dhyana for helping out most of Saturday afternoon and the Etters as well.
All the trim is now painted and the trim line has been cut in for rolling the walls (the ceiling cut in still needs to be done). Basically, the easy stuff is left.
Plug receptacles and faceplates need to be installed.
Furniture needs to be assembled.
Books will need to be carried up from the basement when everything is done.
I have other commitments this week so I am done. Good luck.

Thanks so much everyone for offers of help..... it will indeed be a scramble. Bubba, you ROCK! And thank you Dhyana and the Etters'ez....!
Here's the schedule for this week in trying to push stuff to finish if we can by Nov 1...a stretch, but we'll see.
Tomorrow, Tuesday the 27th, whoever is willing will meet at 1 pm at MCC to finish the walls since Bubba and his crew did the LIONS share of the stuff already.
Thursday, John will be dropping off the shelving that has arrived (not all has) and we will assemble them from 11 and on....as well as bringing up the books from downstairs and start putting them in place as best as possible. Sandy, our librarian, has sorted them downstairs already.
Friday afternoon at 5, we will continue putting books in place, and perhaps continue on Saturday. ALL help will be appreciated!

Considering the number of books we've gotten by so many awesome peeples, we WILL definitely need help Friday evening and Saturday after yoga class is over. Hopefully, it'll just be making the library into a library! Putting the books in genre sections. Sandy has sorted the majority of them, so that'll be easy. They need to be slogged from downstairs to upstairs. And then, also, just kinda primping up the stuff, ya know?

PLEASE have someone take care of the power receptacle that the computers were plugged into (front wall). When I took the faceplate off the receptacle to paint, the receptacle just fell apart! The faceplate is the only thing holding it together. I purchased new faceplates and receptacles and left them on the built-in bookcases. It should be an easy swap for anyone who is handy; I just didn't get to it.
I would hate to see the library burn down. :(

It's a library open to the community being run by a committee of the Saint Andrew's Community Center Project. We're looking into cooperation with area libraries for inter-library loans, etc, but these things will come as we grow and feel our way through the process. This is an all volunteer effort and library hours will initially coincide with the Mountain Community Marketplace hours, from 11-2 on Sundays. As need grows, we'll expand hours as we can with volunteers manning the desk. Library cards will be available to everyone, I believe. I've looked over the selections so far and there are all kinds of fiction and nonfiction, young adult, children's books, etc. The community has been very generous with their donations :)

Get in line for a library card, see the potential of the new library, visit the MCC for the FIRST time, start thinking about Christmas presents at the Mountain market, schmooze with you neighbors, learn about the Blue Ridge mountain neighborhood

Many thanks to Wormie and Sandy and all others (who's names I don't know yet) who made this library possible.
We stopped by and got a library card for the family and the wee ones loved it.
Yes it is small but it is a huge accomplishment!
:thanks1::

I'm signed up to work the library desk on 11/22. Hope to see more neighbors there that day!
I missed it :( missed it all - got down in the cleaning mode and lost sight of this momentous occasion! I'll make it up to you!! I'll be there to get my Library Card!
I think people will be really impressed and surprised with the quality of the "donated" books. Thanks community.

If you missed the action.
Others with better gear took some better pics, I'll wager. You can be sure the local papers will be sent a news release by the SAMCCP

Thank you, Commissioners for the much needed support.

I have already read Baby Girl her borrowed book twice today, and I think The Boy has started reading his. This will be an awesome resource here!

How much was the check for?

The check was for 2500.00, if I remember correctly. We also received several monetary donations today from individual folks, as well as more books and movies!
The library is far from finished, we're waiting for a couple other pieces of furniture and it'd be nice to get some more bookshelves as time goes by, too! We've gotten lots of wonderful books from folks, and like Lar said, we're not talkin' throwaway stuff either! People have been amazing.

This probably belongs in the Help section, but I'm hoping more folks see it here.... If the mods want to move it, that's fine, too.

Wormie, as a newbie to the forum that collection of conversations regarding the library was priceless! Wish that we had joined the forum earlier to help more...but glad that Chris could help out on Friday night and that we got there on Sunday. We got library card #6 and used it immediately. The children were happy and impressed. :D Of course Theo would have been happy with anyplace that offered brownies. :o
Ok, put me down as someone who would help ferry books around as needed.
Next, I see the use of the word 'spreadsheet' in above quoted post. I'm happy to help create such a wonderous beast as I love that type of work.
I'd love to have a conversation with you and/or Library Lady about that. A spreadsheet would be good but a database might work even better as a way to print out the list AND track where the books are and when they might be back, etc.
That's the type of work I used to do, setting up databases and such, before I became a full-time SAHMama. :)
I'll be there anyway on the 22nd to volunteer at the desk. But I'd be happy to do other dates if you need...just let me know.
peace,

Thank ya, Attachlings! Yes, the brownies did seem to be a big hit with your son...LOLOL...it was too cute.
KConnant has also offered to do a spreadsheet thing.....between all of us I imagine there'll be plenty to do. First we need to make a list of the books (author, title, genre, paperback or hardback), then we can sort n' sift to our collective heart's content! We'll have, eventually, too many books for our shelving (as it stands now) so we'll store some downstairs but if someone is looking for a particular book/author we can easily go down and get it for them. That sort of thing and the home delivery stuff is especially what I want the lists for. As we have wireless internet in our little library it'd be easy enough to set up with a laptop.
We can also track our patrons and such. Right now there is no 'return date' for stuff borrowed. Folks are on the honor system.
As long as I am off, I will ferry books around, just keep me posted on when and where. I may even take a day of manning the library.

Thank you for finding my son cute. ;) He is cute, and funny, and brilliant but I think he'd trade me any day of the week for chocolate. ;)
I'd be happy to help with any part of the process...I don't need to be the captain, I can be a good deck hand too. (But I am not shy about captaining if that's how my skills can be best used.)
Your mention of a WiFi connection got me thinking...It would be really great if anyone could just see the database/spreadsheet as long as they had an internet connection. For those people that do have the internet, they could just pull it up from home and see what's in, what's out and such. There would still, potentially, be the need for a printout for those without internet.
Google documents would provide one possible way to achieve this. The list could be made available as a read-only to everyone via a link. This allows for those with pre-set permissions to change info (add titles, check out titles, etc.) from any computer with an internet connection. This could be really useful, me thinks, from the standpoint of adding titles. I could do this from home, for example, where I get a couple of boxes and put them in the database as I can and then deliver the boxes to the library for shelving or storage.
Anyway, just getting the brainstorming going. These are the types of projects that get me thinking. :)

Congratulations to Sandy, Glowy, and all of us for sharing community spirit and improving our neighborhood. I love the idea of storing books downstairs, reminds me of the stacks at the Library of Congress (LOC) in Washington, D.C.
Requesting a book from the stacks at the LOC requires filling out a little form and having it vacuum shot to another location. Within 15 minutes to a couple of hours (sometimes a couple of days) they deliver the book to a specific desk at the library. The reading rooms are big, old, and full or really heavy wooden furniture. People return day after day to a specific desk at the LOC piling up books, which is allowed. The books can not leave the library and the librarians know what desk / person the book is assigned.
Here is a link to LOC http://www.loc.gov/index.html
and a some images http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient&rlz=1T4DKUS_enUS221US221&q=library+of+congress&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=oNvuSpCQGoXPlAeluYW9AQ&sa=X&oi=image_result_group&ct=title&resnum=4&ved=0CCUQsAQwAw
I understand Sweetie offered this before, but perhaps it got lost in the stacks (pun intended) - we own a bar code scanner which will read the bar code imprinted on all modern books and load the information into a spreadsheet. It will make the (at least initial) inventorying of books much quicker and easier.

Library Lady & Wormie you might want to look into using something like www.librarything.com (http://www.librarything.com)
You can enter 200 books for free, as many as you like for $10 (year) or $25 (life).

That's a terrific idea to have one library thread. I was having trouble keeping up with the various postings.
Well, we're officially open for business! Thanks to many, many volunteers (and I personally want to thank Wormie for ALL her help), our little library has been transformed with a beautiful paint job (and a special thank you to Bubba and the painted ladies), tons of beautiful books and 18 official card carrying members.
Thank you Willis for posting the photos and for being there when we needed you. The Commissioners' check didn't bounce, and it is now up to us to make this a wonderful, friendly place for residents to come and enjoy books and meet their neighbors.
Wormie will be overseeing our "outreach" program, so do let her know about those housebound individuals. We want everyone in our area to be able to enjoy the books!
Hopefully, we'll be having some other special programs in the future: children's storytimes, book discussions, crafting groups, and, if anyone is interested, a genealogy group, which I'll be happy to teach.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of you at our library. Please stop by and introduce yourselves and sign up for a library card.
Yours Truly,
Sandy the Library Lady

On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, November 29th there will be a special children's (youth/adult) corner reading of "Stories on Native American Indians." Readings will be dependent on the age of those attending. Books for those 5 to 95 will be available, with a special collection for those 12 to 20. There will be plenty of time for others to share stories, poems, music, art, etc. If anyone has any special donations on the theme of Native American Indians or other peoples living in full ecology I would greatly appreciate having them soon. If anyone knows a Native American please invite them.
Grafxgirl made the giant fake check that was featured on the front page of the Spirit this week in the article about the Library opening and the grant from the County Commission.
I did not think we had enough time for something like this and hesitated to even ask - but she turned it around in less than an hour!
Makes me wonder if perhaps GG has more experience at making fake checks than we want to know about.

LOL! You wouldn't believe the things I have been asked to make in my career as a graphic designer!
You know what else I have experience at? Working in a library. As a substitute teacher, I've filled in for several of the librarians in the schools. I've been considering on being a volunteer, but probably not until Christmas break, spring break and summer because I'm pretty busy during the week with work and the kids.

Brought to you by Wormie!
I must say I am pickled tink about how well the library is going and most expecially by all the help we've gotten from neighbors old and new. Today was Theresa's day as librarian! Next week is my turn. And all you folks that donated awesome books and movies (we're not talkin' throwaway stuff...we're talkin' good stuff!)! And the folks who've volunteered to cover a Sunday as librarian.
It's really pretty fun. Meet new neighbors and chat with old ones, schmooze, check out the books, grab a nosh from one of the MCM vendors, have some BD coffee....and it's just for 3 hours.
Please pass the word around about our new library. It's a work very much in progress (still waiting on some furniture and a little desk for the librarian) but it's SO on it's way.
