...Through parks and rec, why are they so expensive?

Eighty dollars an hour...

Is there any place else locally that offers them?

Thanks.

When I was younger I took swimming lessons at the local YMCA. There isn't one in Jefferson County but there are Y's in both Frederick and Leesburg.

...Through parks and rec, why are they so expensive? Eighty dollars an hour...What are you talking about? They charge $40/session and there are four half-hour classes in each session. That works out to $10/class (or $20/hour).

This is a good question KC. We're looking at swim lessons this summer too.

It looks like they only offer it at the new facility at SU, and its 40 bucks a session.
Each session looks like it includes 4 classes... 10 bucks a pop seems resonable to me.

That said, the quality inn on 340 has a nice pool.
I'm not sure if they rent it for parties, however it could be worth asking.

I rented that pool once for a birthday party. It is a cool idea but remember to consider the age of the kids at the party and their swim abilities. I originally did not intend to go into the pool, but found I better just to be sure since there is no lifeguard. I thought it was reasonably priced too, but don't remember what that was.

Well 10 dollars a session is perfectly do able. (80 dollars a session is do-able, but who would!!)
I must have read it wrong thinking each 30 minutes was a session, and having 2 kids, would be paying 80 dollars each 30 minute(/kid) session...20 is waay cooler!!

Thanks for pointing that out LFE!

I don't think we're going to wait until summer for the lessons...Probably sign them up for the next available session.

Here is something for all of us to consider... group rides to things like this.
Although my kids may fit into the same abiltiy group, its a bit of a haul and if they were split into different groups, hanging out makes it no fun for one kid... and of course driving back and forth more then once a day is not good for any of us.

Although I do not want to deal with the logistics... anyone else think we should start a:
Kid-pooling <-- lots of pun inteneded... type thing around activities like this?

For what it's worth, we took the classes last year at Energie through the JCC. The pool was ridiculously cold. All the parents were complaining.

We plan to sign the boys up again this spring, but at Shepherd U instead.

We plan to sign the boys up again this spring, but at Shepherd U instead. You may find the S.U. pool cold, too. Heating a pool is a bit of a cr@p shoot. Too high, and your lap swimmers and swim teams have a problem. Too low, and your casual users and swim lesson participants complain. Also, consider how much energy is required to raise a large volume of water just one degree. Energy costs were pretty high last year, which would explain why the place on Washington Street was kept cooler.

Editor-That's where we will be, via parks and rec., provided they don't let just anyone in during the lessons.

i took my 5 month old to shepard pool this past saturday. it was really nice. we didnt do lessons, just open swim. the pool was warm enough for us; her lips turned a little purple when we got out though. but, we ran for the showers and it was fine. she loved it. and, they actually have one free day a month.

That's a great idea of something to do on a weekend. Sceffi, do you know where to obtain a schedule for free swim at Shepherd?

I also want to do swimming lessons for my little one, but the drive to/from home to SU will be much longer than the lesson itself. That stinks... I wish there was a closer option

Sceffi, do you know where to obtain a schedule for free swim at Shepherd?I would also be interested in that information, since my wife's surgeon has recommended swimming as the perfect exercise for her. I would like to check the pool out without her first, though, since her mobility is still somewhat limited.
