The title says it all, any plans to grow anything cool this year? Are we Zone 7? I saw some climbing plants that I might want to try, but I'm worried it might be too cold.
I have a 3 year old herb garden, so I'll keep up with that, but I want to do a square foot veggie garden on the deck with CJ too so that we can still garden in August when the snakes come out.

I have some Munstead lavender seedlings that are doing the right thing. I'm going to stick them under the lights tomorrow. :)
I have Heirloom seeds en route, I'm going to start some indoors, and direct sow some later on, and see which method works best for me.
I'm not doing anything special with the fowers this year, besides moving some things around, like the irises and daisies that are begging to be divided.
I'm focusing on growing food this year. Peas, carrots, green beans (pole and bush, to see which ones I like better), 5 kinds of tomatoes, chiles, jalapenos, zucchini and yellow squash, musk melons, watermelons, onions, more herbs, and I'm going to try eggplant again. I can't wait to get started.
Most likely a bunch of exotic deer food...

Sounds about right.
Maybe a little catnip again. Just because it's so much fun.

Golden Midget Watermelon
I have some different ones coming, wanna trade a few?
My usuals, tomatoes (roma's, big boys, cherry), cucs, zucchini, squash, beans, peppers (green, yellow, jalapeno, habanero, cayenne), peas. Probably going to keep it kind of simple as I won't have as much weeding time this year.

...That's all I can remember right now.
You forgot brussel sprouts, peas, sugar snaps, Taylor's mammoth sunflowers and the wall o' beans (not just green, BTW). Also still on back order from last year are strawberries and blueberries........ Oh, and moth balls along with other copperhead repellents.
Decided not to waste my time or space this year with corn, broccoli or cauliflower.
On a side note I think I may have some seeds left over from last years crops.

Don't have a ton of space in the garden and the rest of the family only eats "certain" veggies. Not worth growing zucchini if I'm the only one eating it. So:
Tomatoes, peas (the familys favorite so we do a fall crop as well), purple beans (another favorite), onions, peppers, delicata squash, bush type pumpkins (to save space), basil, sunflowers, nastirtums, strawberries (got 50 plants last year and they're all doing well, so we should have a bumper crop as long as the dogs don't eat them all), 3 types of gourds, parsley, and many assorted annual flowers. And of course I've gotta take care of the stuff planted/moved last fall.
... Taylor's mammoth sunflowers....
On a side note I think I may have some seeds left over from last years crops.
OH OH OH - may I have some sunflower seeds???

All the usual stuff - tomatos, peppers, peas, - trying winter squash (several different kinds) for the first time in years, cucs, and really heavy on dry/shelling beans - all different kinds. I love to grown beans to dry and use for soup etc. Some new herb?? strawberry spinach - looks interesting. Also thought I would try some basil from seed.

Has anyone tried growing the tomatoes that hang from the upside containers?? I'd like to try something that I can grow in a screened porch as I can't keep up with the critters.

Yepper. Thats how we grow it every year... and we generally grow more then one type.
BTW
I don't think the upside down maters are a special type. I think it all has to do with the container.
Our yellow cherry last year grew into plant-zilla. The thing was huge and everywhere!

I tried it last year - didn't find it worth the time - effort - BUT the only place I had to hang them was not really sunny enough. If you would like my upside down containers, I'd be happy to give them to you (if they survived the winter - I left them hanging . . . . )

Hmmm. Thanks katherine. I would like to try this year. As soon as we all dig out from the snow I'd like to take you up on your offer and use your containers. If successful, I'll give you half. I can eat only so many t'maters.
We found that 3 or 4 mater plants provides more then we can eat fresh.
Over canning the rest or our yeild, we skin, de-seed, cut up and freeze some for soups and stews.

Gosh - in about a month maybe?? when the ice melts out of them and possibly they might not be as heavy and I can lift them down from the top deck where they are hanging?

We didn't have any luck either, but at the school where I work, they had great luck with the cherry tomatoes in the upside down planter, I might try those this year.

After assessing what I can see from under the snow it seems all my plants have suffered pretty major damage this year :-( so I guess I'll be replacing some ornamental plants this year and will plant my first in-ground vege garden, using the sqft method. Not sure what I will plant yet, I guess a bit of everything, but really want to do lettuce and cucumbers, cause fresh from the ground taste can not be beat.
BTW how are you being ensured that your seeds that you are buying are not Gynetically Modified? The site that I have been looking at for seed doesnt confirm not deny that there seeds are one or the other? Any suggestions?

I ordered my seeds from www.heirloomacresseeds.com (http://www.heirloomacresseeds.com)
Snow peas seem to be in order for planting soon :-)
BTW, this place is great.
Our old neighbors (organic farmers) even have write ups in it.

I had cherry tomatoes in one and that plant was much better than the other. I do not have a really good place to hang them though. I just HAD to try it.
Sent you a PM cindy - l took them down from the deck hangers yesterday. Let me know if you want directions to pick up or how to arrange a pick up of these things.
