PUBLIC HEALTH NEWS RELEASE:

April 1, 2010

The Jefferson County Health Department and Jefferson County Animal Control would like to inform the public that they have received confirmation from the WV Office of Laboratory Services in Charleston, WV, of a stray cat that tested positive for rabies in the Mt. Pleasant Road area of Jefferson County, WV.
Warning: There may be other stray (unvaccinated) cats and infected wildlife in the area!
Jefferson County Animal Control Officers, along with representatives of the Jefferson County Health Department are informing the public of traps being placed in the area to catch other animals that may have come into contact with this rabid animal.
Rabies is a viral disease that affects the central nervous system. It is transmitted most often by bites or saliva through cuts or opening in the skin. Untreated, it is virtually 100% fatal!
The Jefferson County Health Department has the following recommendations:


Avoid wild animals and stray pets
Keep rabies vaccinations current on pets
Do Not let pets run at large
If bitten or if you have come into contact with wildlife, consult your physician immediately
