This is probably old news for many, but I was reading an article on herb spirals (http://www.mitra.biz/joomla/index.php/writingssustainability/3049-herbspiral), I'm going to start building one tomorrow if it's nice outside, the concept is so neat.
Looks good.... makes sense.
Depending on soil (or lack of soil) you may or may not need the gravel layer (good drainage is critical).
- Big Tom's mixed compost also works wonders... our thyme for strawberry garden grew like crazy with it!

Lavender and bee balm are a really pretty combination. The herb gardens are nice because the deer leave them alone. My garden was an expensive deer salad before I started planting herbs. Now they usually leave it alone.

For those with crappy soil or no soil - straw bale gardening is a great alteranative for herb, vege and flower gardens. Lots of online resources for those interested and I posted something on this last year.
