Another caveat for parents (Who shouldn't need any warning) about the dangers of FaceBook

Schools address improper websites

Megan Fisher, Journal Staff Writer

MARTINSBURG - A fad harmful to both children and school systems has become the newest tool in networking and cyberbullying among students.

While Facebook, a social network, was originally designed for college students, even children in middle school are registered with the website. Through the site, participants are able to form group websites to share pictures, hold discussions and more. Officials say young students have taken the site too far.

"We're getting websites that are being created by students which are using our logo, and the sites are somewhat perceived to be our school system's," said Berkeley County Schools Assistant Superintendent Rick Deuell. "These are sites that we absolutely don't endorse or approve of."See the full article HERE (http://www.journal-news.net/page/content.detail/id/558782/Schools-address-improper-websites.html?nav=5006)

It isn't facebooks fault/problem. I believe it comes down to parenting. If your kid has a facebook page, then as a parent you should keep an eye on their activity. With texting, facebook, etc. parents have more to keep an eye on, but that is the nature of the beast (ie, technology).

There are many parents who refuse to see/admit that their little angel isn't as perfect as they believe they are.

Yep. I think someone created a site for HFMS like HFMS rocks or something like that. I don't know what more can be said about facebook, I was told that as far as cyberbullying at HFMS, they just call the police.

i was under the impression that you had to be 18 to have a facebook account. Obviously there are ways around this, but that is indeed the case, school supported facebook groups really shouldn't have any place on there.

I think its 12 or 13, so you just put in the wrong age, I can't imagine how else they do it.

Perhaps if the schools didn't block facebook they could gain a little more control over it.

If a student posts to one of these areas from a school computer, then that opens it up for the school to deal with it. However, the action of blocking it is simply acting like it's not there, but the problem with that is that it is there. An organization is far better off taking steps to guide their people on what is and is not appropriate activity, as opposed to saying "nah nah, we can't see you".

The folks under 18 on facebook are hidden from 'strangers' that are over 18.

Its to easy for parents and admin type folks to blame the tools instead of themselves.

They usually are the tools. You can have control over your children without being controlling...

Control is an illusion, especially when it comes to human beans.
