This morning about 5:45 close to gate 2, I saw the deer that is sort of a color combo of white and lt. brown. I believe Betcsu posted a photo of this deer last year. It kind of looks like a deer version of a pinto pony -- weird but neat!!
That deer hangs out by our house on Cub Run on a fairly frequent basis in the winter. Glad to know he is still around because I hadn't seen him since May! I have pics of him if anyone is interested. He is a really odd looking deer!!

I was the one who posted his baby picture here last year. I also have seen him/her (not sure which) through this past winter and as recent as last week it was roaming through our yard. In the snow it was much harder to spot it.

I'd love to see pix of the piebald deer. There was a small buck about 12 years ago like that. I'm sure it's not the same one.

I found that deer right after birth. He could barely walk and now, he has a small rack. He's also been bedding across the road from my house, at an abandoned house's yard. He has another brother that is usually not too far behind, and their mother came back this year with triplets (she had triplets last year, but something happened to one of them).
He's part albino.

If someone can tell me how to post my pic of the deer, I have a couple good shots, but can't figure out how to make the insert image button work!!

first off, you have to have the pic stored on a web server somewhere. if you use erols or aol, they give their members free web space.
once the pic is uploaded to a server that allows remote hosting, get the url for the image. then make sure you use the 'reply to this topic' button and not the 'quick reply' area.
on the left hand side of the regular reply area is a link for forum code. click that link and itll pop up a new window with the code to add an image.
if you use a server that wont allow remote hosting (like geocities) you can just give us the url to the web page the image is on and we can go to see it as opposed to you posting the image here.
i hope this made sense and that it helps.

I copied this off line the picture wouldn't copy.
Piebald: Piebald deer have patches of white hair but are otherwise normally colored. Piebalds are thought to be more common than albinos. Depending on what part of the country you are from these deer are sometimes referred to as pintos and come in various amounts of white and brown.

One of my favorite hobbies during snow days last winter was to stare out my front window at the wooded area across the street and watch this deer (and others) chase each other up and down the mountain. I just love that deer. If shannondale had a mascot, it should be him.

If I was naming her (I'm pretty sure she is a her.) I'd name her IVY because she and her friend kindly ate all the English Ivy in the back yard that I've been trying to get rid of!!

OHP said it was a buck. But I like the name Ivy anyway. And I know everytime a Hosta pops up there eaten.

Surprisingly enough the piebald and friend never ate anything (knock on wood) other than the ivy the whole time they hung out here. They left my hostas, my daylilys and my shrubs alone...almost as if they knew the ivy wasn't welcome and were helping out!!

Nope, no antlers on a female. The picture I posted was from last fall, when antlers should have been prominant...I wonder if we have two piebalds in Shannondale.

This deer is now a 4-point (and a mutant). Just to make everyone aware, hunters are urged to kill a deer that is in any way albino. It could cause any other deer he breeds with (this year) to have the same mutation. They also say this is from inner-breading.---Just and FYI.

He wouldn't have had any antlers last year. He was only born early summer last year. It wouldn't have been until this year when he gets his "rack".

This was my problem with naming him but I did anyway. I REALLY don't want to see him hanging upside down in someones yard gutted. I know they are supposed to be killed off. The more inbreeding there is the more deformities there are. These piebald deer end up looking like goats.

If the piebald buck was born early summer last year, then it's not the same deer in the picture I posted. That picture was taken in early fall last year and was much larger than a deer would be if it had been born earlier that summer.
One Happy Penguin,
I'm curious as to where you found the info about hunters being encouraged to kill piebalds and albinos? and about albino genes being the result of inbreeding? I've lived around here all my life and this is only the second "mutant" deer I've seen, so I'm naturally curious about them (the mutants) and have been trying to find more info.
One of the websites I visited claimed it was illegal to kill albino deer in a midwest state (I want to say it was Wisconsin...but I may be wrong) and one website stated that is was Native American folklore that killing an albino or piebald deer was a sign of bad luck. Other than that, I couldn't find any info about hunting regulations in regards to these 'mutants'. I did find webpages that stated that they could have deformaties (skeletal-short legs and Roman nose), but nothing that said this was a bad thing.
I'd love to read any other info that is out there about these unique animals.

There are a lot of sites for piebald/albino deer. It was my understanding that letting these mutant deer breed would bring down the quality of the rest of the herd. Funny thing about this I don't like the idea of any deer being killed but I know it has to be done to keep the herd population down.

OK, here are some things I found on different sites.
Some states do have laws against killing albino/white/piebald deer. I checked with WVDNR & couldn't find where it said it was against the law to do so. I assume is is OK to kill them then. But I could have missed it.
Yes they are ok to eat.
A white deer is different than a albino. White deer have brown eyes.
Mutants don't usually live as long as a normal colored deer.

"Piebald Deer Not That Uncommon" (http://www.theithacajournal.com/news/stories/20021129/localsports/470126.html)
To paraphrase: "Every hunter only _thinks_ his piebald deer kill is worthy of newspaper coverage".
I can easily see how lots of BS would arise - they're illegal to kill, we're encouraged to kill them, etc. But they're rare enough it looks unlikely any agency has ever bothered to write specific laws regarding them.

thanks for the info tony.
and ya know, im not so sure that killing them to keep the population down is really neccesary. wouldnt they be naturally killed off by civilization taking over their natural habitat as more and more housing and developments increase? im thinking eventually there wont be any room left for any critters, much less people!

My husband is a hunter, his father is a hunter, and we have multiple friends that are hunters in this state. The deer was born around last may (end of may early june?). Believe me, you won't see him hanging in our yard. The white deer crossed in front of me last week and his face is very odd looking. He has a VERY long face (I've never seen a deer that looks like this). Kind of like a deer/jackass.
He is very interesting to look at, but he could cause other deformities if he mates (or he may not).

They will need to be "contained" eventually. Whether houses come in or not, there is still too much land around for the deer to run. Thus, I'm afraid that we'll have the same problem VA does...dead deer on the side of the road.

Well then your deer and my deer are two different critters, because there is no way the one I posted the picture of was born last May. We saw him/her several times before we took the pictures and I've been around deer enough to know relative sizes of fawns and yearlings. I wonder how many piebalds are in our area.
