13 individuals or families have sent in $1195.00 thru Monday the 20th!
(in one swell foop, the total has increased by $500.00!)

The Janzen Family (Gate 1, Shannondale) suffered a devastating accident while returning from watching the Christmas Parade in town. Details are in another section of this forum. Dana (coglehowell) and I decided to appeal to the Mountain Community on their behalf to ensure they would have some semblance of a Christmas. We will collect donations for 2 weeks and present them to the family on Dec. 22. Willis has agreed to be our "banker."
Please make your check to "The Janzen Family" and send asap to the following address:
Mr. Willis Nowell (IMHO)
389 Shenandoah River Drive (#429)
Harpers Ferry, WV 25425

Dana will also setup a collection jar at Bill Webers Store for those who prefer to donate cash. Willis will try to give us a running tally on amount collected. We need everyones help to make this work. Please tell your non-wired friends and neighbors about our COMMUNITY effort. HAPPY HOLIDAYS to all. Thank You.

What type of toys (boy and/or girl)?

Also, can I suggest gift cards to like "Ruby Tuesday" and the like. A friend of mine had a devasting experience and she said she liked the restaurant cards because there were times when she didn't have time to shop for groceries let alone cook.

Thanks for the update.

I've received to date(12/11/2004) several checks but way short of helping the kids and the whole Jantzen family dis-remember the terrible way their holiday season started on that trip back from Charles Town's Xmas parade. Let's pitch in a give them the where-with-all to start forgetting the tragedy and start celebrating the holiday season. My address' above or make the donation in the jar at Bill Weber's Store.

I saw the poster at the Gate 3 Mailshed. Loved it. Hopefully there are a few more arround at other mailsheds, etc. Related thought, some of the churches might also be willing to put a sign like this up on a board, or else mention it during announcements.

So is IMHO going to be the permanent addition to Willis' name, like PHD?

Thanks--hope it spurs some donations. So far, almost NO Community Spirit.

Yes Tony--I believe we should officially confer IMHO on Willis as the highest graduate degree possible.

Not to get too high tech or anything, but PayPal will let you establish a donation button on a web page. If I didn't have to write out a paper check and mail it or carry it over to somebody's house, I would donate via PayPal.

Has anyone talked to the local volunteer fire department? Maybe something could be set up in conjunction with the christmas tree sale. Possibly a drop off point for food, gifts, etc. Let me know what everyone thinks. I know a couple of the guys I work with are volunteeers there. It won't hurt to ask.

A few things here: one is I'll endeavor to stop saying In My Humble Opinion(IMHO), a habit acquired while offering testimony in court cases, so let us delete those honorific initials after my name. Secondly, directed to Ron, don't be so judgemental of our fellow citizens. We've had close to 300 views of the topic and money isn't all these folks need- I'm sure there are lots and lots of good thoughts and prayers directed toward the family. Thirdly, perhaps if we decide to get organized as a group, the paypal option might be a good one- An s'daledotorg bank acct. particularly to accept donations for the support of the website and for situations such as the Janzen Family disaster. But this informal method seems to be working right now. I just took a bag of toys to Weber's store, but as the "banker" I don't know what Ron or Dana might have done at the firehall- A splendid idea, Parker! And finally(whew!) the banker reports that a total of 7 individuals or families have donated $320.00 dollars to date. Dana has indicated that she'll take some pix when the checks and toys are presented to the family. Keep those good thoughts and prayers, along with the somolians, coming!!!

First of all let me say thank you all for everything you are doing the money is great and if you dont have to give we all understand and God does here prayers so if your not in a financial situation to give Prayer is much needed also.

so know what everyone wants to here Updates on the Janzens.

Let me start with Carrie ( 8yr old lil girl) she has been home with a cracked pelvis and is scooting around with a walker and she has a broken nose which she has has surgery on.She still has blood in her urine but they do believe that is still from her abdomen being so bruised her whole belly is still black from the seat belt. She has been to see her father once and is at her aunts house on pretty much bed rest.
Mentally she is okay there are some times of the day the family will catch her just staring with a far a way look the Dr think that it is still a little shock in her lil body.

JP (12 yr old boy) the doctors are calling him there lil miracle he was not suspose to be home until January. He is coming home today. he has a cracked skull big scar from one side of forehead over top to other side of forehead. Eyes are still a little swollen but he can see out of both of them.He also has a cracked pelvis but doesnt need any kind of surgery on that at the moment. First day he got up and walked ws 12-11-04 he has loose teeth so not eating very much solids. talking as well as he can considering one side of his mouth is drawn up due to injuries. Had over the last few days has a tube put in his nose to drain fluids from his brain but the fluid did stop. He does collapse when he walks more than a few steps at home someone will be with him 24/7 he will go back to the doctors once a week and and when the bruising leaves the brain he will have plastic surgery the plastic surgeon has a picture of what JP looked like before and says he can fix everything the exact way it was. JP coming homes means complete bed rest no exeptions

John (father) is in so much pain prayers are gratefully accepted to help with that. Only able to move left arm and head because of all the bpins and rods he also has broken shoulders. He will be 3 months healing before he can even begin therapy. If they can reduce his pain they will let him come home the week after xmas ( but think it will be very doubtful) to heal then he will head to rehab to learn to walk

Angie (mother) is holding up the best to be expected she will only ride in the car with her sister Kristy will ride with no one else spends the day in washington and then the night at her sister Debbies this is where the family will be until John comes home Once JOhn is home the will stay for the 3 to 5 months with Angies Mother Liz and Junior Whitmore in Ranson becasue Liz has a bedroom with good outside access for Johns wheelchair and it will be easier to take care of them there. Angie also remembers the accident very clearly and relives it acouple times a day where she just will start screaming and crying thereforth noone leaves her alone either she has someone with her 24/7 also

This is truly a miracle famiy they where suspose to be in the hospital for at least 3 months and thank god and your prayers they have a long road but 2 of the 3 are out of the hospital.

I'm just the guy collecting the checks sent by mail- I'll give them to Dana or Ron on the 21st so they can arrange to get them to the fam so I'd think the 21st would be the cut-off-not that we wouldn't pass on anything received after that, but the "grand" presentation by Dana to the fam is on the 22nd. Correct me if I'm wrong, Dana.

This is really a bad thing that happened and I am sure with all the people on the mountain and the push from all the great folks on here that more donations of any kind will be comming in even after the cut off date.

I personally would be willing to donate time and materials to build a wheel chair ramp if this is needed and the home can accomadate it in order to get the full family back into their own home as soon as possible. Would need some help with the labor but should be able to make it nice and sturdy and safe. (I am a carpenter).

Secondly, xmas presents for the kids.....Any ideas on what they want? Need? Sizes of clothing? or is this even an option?

Thirdly, my wife and I would like to give $100.00 but would prefer not to mail it anywhere but would like to hand it to someone that is collecting the monies for expediency.

That's about it for now, we hope that everyone can give what they can and all will work out for the best in the end.

Thanks for the donation, Doc, and it was a pleasure to meet you and your wife. I've passed along your generous offer regarding the handicapped accessway to Coglehowell and Mr. acronym, RGSofSSP. Anyone who might wish to donate clothing or toys might consider gift cards, dropped in the jar at Weber's. You all might remember that there's no deadline to giving and any items received subsequent to the "formal" presentation will be passed on to the Janzen's as it's received.

Thanks to everyone on The Mountain for their concern, prayers, good wishes and financial help in making this effort a success. Dana will update us soon on the total received to date, as well as the current status of the Janzen Family. Our Mountain Community is truly magical!

As Willis (no longer humble) recently noted, we will continue to accept contributions and will turn them over to the family thru Dana. The jar will remain at Webers (Thanks Mr. Bill) at least thru Jan 1, and Willis will remain available via mail to accept checks since the weather remained warm enough to preclude his escape to a remote South Seas island.

Tiny Tim had it right: "God Bless Us All."
Thanks, Neighbors.

GRAND TOTAL WAS $1216.00 A met with Angie this afternoon to present her with the money and gifts. SHe cried and I cried and my co worker cried it was just a huge flood. Angie is greatly moved by our act of kindness from everyone in her neighborhood . She thanks each and everyone of you she also has the web address and will be getting on after the holidays when things are settled and they have John out of the hospital until then I was asked to Thank each and everyone of you and to tell you to be watching your mail she is going to drop each of you a card. As far as the Journal reporting on this Matthew was very busy today but promises me he will do a story as soon as he has a opening we are the first on his list. He also took pictures today as dummy me forgot my camera at the big moment. So as soon as he has them I will post them on the site.
As far as the Janzen clan Angie is really feeling the pain now that she has came down off of her emotional roller coaster she has been having pains in her chest and it seems that after xrays where done earlier this week she has 2 cracked ribs and a small fracture in her ankle so she is now feeing the pain. She has a air cast on her arm. Carrie is doing really good healing great. JP has over 40 fractures in his face but doctors say everything is healing the way it should his face looks really good. The family is going to spend the day in the hospital with John on Christmas and he may be home next week to start his healing before heading to rehab.

A update on the family.
John has come home for new Years and will be home for 2 to 3 weeks to do alittle healing before he returns to a rehab most likely in Frederick. JP is still not healed enough to see about more surgerys or not Carrie is doing really great and Angie is finally winding down and has found that she does have a few cracked ribs. The family is currently staying at Angies mothers home in Ranson and will stay there for a while being that Angies mother is a real estate salesperson and newpaper deliverer she will be able to help Angie watch the family 24 hours a day . Thanks so much for the offer of the wheel chair ramp but Angie says they dont need it right now but she does appreciate it and she will be sending everyone a thank you card she has all the addresses off the checks. She has used this money to make her house payment and pay a few other bills. She was very appreciative of the gifts. She says to thank each and everyone of you. I havent seen John yet but will be going out to Angies mothers one day this week to visit the whole family and give them the rest of the money.I am going to continue to houndthe reporter this week about the story if he wont do anything maybe I will do a lil brief in the paper myself and see if they will publish it for me along with a picture. I hope to have pictures of the presentation of the money but the end of the week

The Janzens have received the donations you all so generously contributed and all those good thoughts and prayer have done magic, too. Almost $1400 was raised and was used to help keep the wolves from the family's door. Well, you can get a lot more info when you click on the link below:

Ok, Ok, to answer some questions- I propose the next project to be a fundraiser to pay for a trip to Belize for a poor, deprived(no, not depraved) one-eyed cripple with a shifty disposition who's being picked on by his fellow board members. The poor soul can while away his time in a tropical clime stitching scenes of Caribbean grandeur.
