I happened to see Dale Manuel today. He is rolling up his sleeves to end the preparing and begin seriously working as one of the new county commissioners.

He mentioned that he is thinking that he wants to schedule a meeting in the Shannondale area in January. This would be to re-introduce Locke as the new state representative, as well as bring as many of the other county commissioners who are available and willing, out to us.

When he?s done this before, he usually has other people with him depending on known issues, such as county sheriff and a state trooper rep or DNR officials when we had some specific issue to be discussed. The politicians usually start with a list of things that they are working on (info dump to us and also asking for a show of hands on some options) that is pretty interactive, as well as having a more general, ?Questions from the Audience? session, at the end.

Given the timing, it might be an excellent time to request that the County Commissioners issue a formal letter to the Sec of the WV Dept of Highways for more money for road maintenance (fix pot holes, more paving, bigger culverts so the rain runoff does not do as much damage, cut back brush and mow for 3 feet from edge of road to improve line of sights, particularly on school bus routes, and things like snow removal, etc.)

In the past, these have been held in Weber?s store, which is on Mission Road, about a quarter of a mile past the stop signs at Upper Clubhouse Drive / Gate 3. They are usually held late morning or early afternoon on a Saturday or Sunday.

So, now is a good time to start thinking up questions and even calling or sending them in advance. Dale?s listed in the phone book (725-8160 Home), and regularly checks his email ([email protected]). You can also call or email Leslie Smith who is the primary coordinator for the county commissioners. Normal meetings are held every Thursday.

I spoke to Dale on Thursday. This meeting will be moved back into Feb. He agreed that Saturday is the better option. He needs to check with the other folks (both county commissioners and state elected officials) to determine when.

We also noted that while he would like to continue to use Weber's store as a meeting place, we could use an improvement in seating arrangements. We talked briefly about the idea of borrowing some folding chairs (50-75?) from Blue Ridge Elementary School, with the idea of picking them up on Friday afternoon, and return Monday morning. Anyone have a relationship with the principal there?

Instead of moving chairs back and forth, what if we could get permission to just hold the meeting in the school cafeteria?

The principal's name is Mrs. Zigler. Very nice lady.

If the school can't be used, how about meeting at the fire station? Have them move the vehicles out of the garage and everybody bring a lawn chair if we can't borrow any chairs?

Dale likes Weber's store as a pretty friendly place to meet that is relatively central for all of Mission Road and has a lot of history for him. Bill Weber sets up seating by putting planks on benches, as well as having a few chairs and tends to have a few free snacks (as well as offering the opportunity to buy things like his excellent pies). Generally this is enough room (unless we had 150 people show up) but not always comfortable if you want something to support your back.

Use of the school generally requires the meeting holder to pay for a custodian to be on site for the meeting.

In the past I know there have been meetings at the primary Blue Ridge Fire station on Keyes Ferry Road, but I'm not sure if anyone has tried to hold on here on Mission Road substation.

Mr. Bill is a great host and enjoys being a part of the community. My preference would be to continue the charm of our community even though the seating isn't the greatest. Just my 2 cents worth. Thanks,
