Since I'm moving in on Thursday, it just dawned on me that I need to find out who the untility providers are, who the cable provider is (internet more than TV, and affordable I hope) and any other services that I'll need to subscribe to. Is there a good local vet and a decent mechanic? Can anyone help with recomendations, numbers, prices, etc?

Phone - Frontier 800-921-8101 (They have a new satellite tv / dsl / phone package that's cheaper than what we were paying individually for everything)

Allegheny Power - 800-ALLEGHENY (tell them you're interested in the monthly average payment plan especially if you have electric heat / heat pump. otherwise there's a chance that every two months you'll get an outrageous bill)

Cable - Adelphia 888-68-1000 (they also offer high speed internet)

Waste Management 304-267-6975 (but you may want to do a search on the board...people have been having problems with waste management in this area and apparantly there's a local guy who's better)

I don't have the number for Weber's offhand. (the store further down on Mission Road just past the stop sign / gate 3/4 mailshed) The roast beef sandwiches, strips and fries, and "Fred the Super Chicken" are favorites at our house.

Walmart - 304-728-2720

Anthony's (pizza and subs, delivers to the end of mission road & rt. 9) 304-728-9559

Papa John's (also delivers to the end of mission road & rt. 9) 304-728-7272

Enjoy!

I found the following collection of resources helpful when we first moved here almost 3 years ago.

Hope this might be of use to you. Welcome to the Mountain![8D]

I took my car to Tom, who posted on this website. He is listed as tadsit. I liked him a lot. He looked at my car, determined there was no problem and didn't charge me. He seems pretty trustworthy and he's local. As for the vet, I take my dogs to Leesburg Vet. Hospital in Loudoun. Its convient for my work and I LOVE the vet that I found there (Dr. Erwin). I once took my dog to Countryside on route 9 going towards Charelstown just to have her nails clipped. They proceeded to diagnose her with Mange (which she didn't have) and threatened to not release her. I was fuming! I wouldn't take my dog back there if they paid me.

Some of the good local vets are too busy now to take new patients, and I would certainly agree that Countryside is, at best, more expensive than the norm.

We have some of other helpful info in the local links section (like newspapers).

See other posts about auto mechanics and dealers in the area. Personally I like (both) Creamers (725-2589 and 725-8070) in Charles Town. Thomassens Jeep dealer in Charles Town (725-7031) is okay and a bit overwhelmed (needs a bigger parking lot and more mechanics, so better to plan to do a night drop and leave it the night before) but generally not too pricey as dealers go. My neighbor also

I am pretty frustrated with any of the Isuzu dealers I have tried (Winchester, Fairfax, and Frederic). Also, I would suggest you steer well clear of the Auto dept in Sears in Martinsburg, although I guess it is possible they solved the total mess they were in a couple year ago.

My husband loves our mechanic (Bobby's in Charles Town). Seems very honest and gets the job done quick.

We had some recall things "fixed" by Alex Chevrolet. The mechanic smoked in our vehicle (which had never previously been smoked in) and one of the things doesn't seem like it was touched at all. I don't see us using them again.

Another good place to take your car is C.A.R.S. located in the Burr Industrial Park on the way to Kearneysville. The owner also lives in Shannondale.

I like Creamers, too. We have used them for about 10 years now (if not more). They have always been extremely helpful. They recommended a new vehicle vs. spending more money on the old van we had (we were told yes, they could fix it, but they hated to see us spending that much money when the better option would be a new(er) vehicle). Just recently, they squeezed us in for on an emergency brake job we needed done so we could leave on our scheduled vacation that day!

Hey everyone, thanks for all the helpful tips.

I did call the power company to switch the utilities over, and it took three tries because THEIR records contained an address typo of ONE CHARACTER and as a result they could not locate the account. Aaargh! I do need hi-speed internet access and TV might be nice but is not essential. I read more than I watch. That reminds me...where's the closest library and is it any good?

Charles Town Library is very easy to find. Go to the 2nd stoplight once you're in town, hang a right, go up about a block and it's on the left.

The one in Bolivar has gotten a LOT better since I was a kid. Go into Bolivar (left at the stoplight going on 340 towards harpers ferry... right would take you to the visitor parking and KOA campground). Take a left just past the middle school. Go up a block or so and it's on the left.

The Charles Town Library charges you for a card... I think it's $5, maybe $10 for a family membership and then you have to renew every year. The one in Bolivar is a public library and they do not charge for a library card. Bolivar's library is very small, but the last time I was in, there was a good selection of books.
