Today's (4/13) Herald-Mail contains an editorial concerning the local gypsy moth problem, written by JCC candidate Lyn Widmyer. Thanks again to the current JCC for the cooperation they have shown this year with defending our mountain's trees. Without the cooperation of the JCC, concerned property owners, and other state and federal agencies, to continue and extend this year's spraying program we would be hard-pressed to find any sort of current good news on the GM front.

Cute, indeed. :)

W.Va. is NOT the appropriate abbreviation for West Virginia, and it bugs me that the Herald-Mail doesn't know that.

You're right, it should still be "Va." -- that vote was rigged! :)

There is no doubt that this establishment of a buffer area of protection along the NPS and ATC property that borders Shannondale is a huge accomplishment. And we really greatly appreciate Lyn's story on it. We also are very pleased about the WVDA, NPS, ATC, and JCC efforts to help us accomplish this.
However, we don't want to mislead anyone about what we are facing this summer because it is likely going to be really bad. Our block of Shannondale, RVP and JBF is about 3000 acres and for that area we expect good results, because we have kept on top of surveying and spraying when needed. However, we can't give a 100% guarantee that there won't be some tree damage due to blow in from other areas, as well as the fact that these caterpillars are unpredictable in the way that they spread. There are many, many areas that are not going to be treated in May, that need to be, so unless the weather Gods are with us, these areas will likely be devastated. That is why we keep begging other communties to sign up for the gyspy moth suppression program.
