Not even sure if 'renaturalization' is actually a word, but........Over the years my husband and I have managed to purchase most of the lots on our street (at least on the uphill side, which are typically more likely to be buildable lots). Our most recent purchase took the longest and unfortunately cost the most because it has already been cleared and a well put on it. In addition some baby owls, only a couple days old were thrown out of their nest, literally, when the trees were cut down in that process. It ended up a happy story but now that we are going to be owning it, we want to return it to nature for the wildlife. Does anyone know of any programs to assist property owners do such a thing? Unfortunately, the lots in Shannondale are pretty small so although we own a lot of individual lots, it only totals 2.5 acres so does not qualify for the one state program which requires 10 acre minimum. One good thing is that all of the land behind it is state owned and nothing can be built on it and beyond that is federal land for the Appalachian Trail. I have checked everything from DNR to NRCS, WV Department of Forestry and the US department of Forestry with no luck. Any advise is appreciated. If nothing else, maybe a local nursery that can offer bulk/wholesale pricing for native plants/trees. I would really prefer a variety to include evergreens and plants that provide food sources but will take whatever just to fill the void that has been left. Thanks.
