With apologies to the Beatles I'm dubbing this teaser a Magical History Tour, "goo goo g'joob"

I visited Middleway with the County's Water Advisory Committee May 20th 2013. We met with Peter Fricke who's a honcho with the Middleway Conservancy. Its mission is preserving and restoring the Middleway Historic District. Mr. Fricke wanted to describe some of the issues facing his group while they strive to carry out that mission.

I'll see if I can put together a little article soon, but I thought I'd whet your appetite for a taste of history in the meantime. The conservancy has a brochure and a self-guided walking tour and you can find a wealth of information on their website
HERE
I'll post a few pics below. Most of you guys know that 10 years ago on May 20th, the Shannondale Club Alumni Site made its debut online. My explanation in the first paragraph of its homepage states the purpose in a nutshell:
In the Winter of 2002, some former members of Shannondale Community Club came up with the idea of creating a website through which we could reconnect with others and share memories of the halcyon days of our youth. It was (and is) of great interest to us to preserve those wonderful times and the spirit we created and shared at the Club all those years ago. We felt the memories we created back then were too precious to lose to time. This site was created as a humble effort in that direction.

It appears that the filter/baffle we had installed in the effluent line three years ago got clogged and caused on over-full condition in the tank. Not to go into the history of our septic system, (which is actually semi-documented elsewhere here on S&B), this is actually not the first time we have had to have an over-full tank pumped. What is a first, however, is the fact that we were charged the rate for a 1250 gallon tank (we have a 1000 gallon tank). This was not an over-sight or an error in billing; the driver was quite specific about what he was doing.
In hindsight, I'm thinking that we were taken advantage of Even though this is a company we have used before, I'm now suspecting that we were scammed. Before I call the company's office on Monday, I wanted to see if others have had this happen and/or it's now a normal fact of business in the "honey-dipping" business.
So, mountain peeps... Anyone have similar experience, lack thereof, or is actually in the business of business-removal?

This morning at 4am (May 11) Blue Ridge, Harpers Ferry, Citizen's and Neersville, Va. FD's responded to
a house fire 1/2 way down LaMonte Dr. The house was recently vacated (May 1st) via eviction and was not occupied, but the house is a complete loss. I had heard a trail bike around 3am then later a car (in bad
need of a muffler) around 3:30am on LaMonte. Anybody else notice anything?

Hello - When I walk outside, although it's quite sunny today it sounds like it's raining. We've noticed that there are little black specks all over everything (cars, decks, grill, everything) and we're also noticing that the leaves in all of our oak trees in the woods are eaten quite a bit already. The black specks are about the size of the poppies on a poppyseed roll or bagel. At first I was thinking it was the cicadas coming alive, but it's really a rain sound. Would all those bugs have made it to the trees already even if they did erupt? Any ideas? Also, why doesn't hitting the hard return work? It's not my keyboard because in other applications it works fine... Thanks!

SHEPHERDSTOWN SHOP CONTINUES DONATIONS TO LOCAL AUDUBON SOCIETY

The On the Wings of Dreams shop in Shepherdstown is once again donating proceeds from crystal sales to the Potomac Valley Audubon Society.
In January, Laura Rau and her husband Jeff celebrated ten years of the shop’s ownership. This is the sixth year shop owner Laura Rau has set aside three cents from each crystal and mineral sold throughout the year to donate to the Society.
This year's donation totals $250. The accompanying photo shows Ms. Rau, left, withPVAS Executive Director Kristin Alexander, right. The store dog, Sedona, is in between.
"Supporting the PVAS gives us the opportunity to participate in both environmental and humanitarian efforts," Ms. Rau said. "The Society's work to protect and preserve wetlands and other sensitive natural environments are vital in this fast-growing area. The PVAS also sponsors numerous programs to educate children about the environment, encouraging them to get out in nature and away from the computer or TV. It's an important investment in the future all around."
"A very special thank you is also in order for the many customers of the shop whose crystal purchases in 2012 contributed to the PVAS donation."
This year's donation will be used to support PVAS youth programs, which include camps, scholarships and programs that promote conservation and exploration in nature.
Ms. Rau recently attended the Tucson Gem Show, the largest gem and mineral show in the world, and has returned with many beautiful specimens that will contribute to next year's donation.
The shop is located at 139 West German Street. The Blue Ridge Watershed Coalition (BRWC) of Harpers Ferry is happy to announce our “DIF-SIP” program to offer financial assistance for septic pumping to residents of the Blue Ridge in Jefferson County.

Regular Pumping and maintenance of septic tanks save homeowners money and protect the environment. Septic pumping improves groundwater, and surface water quality of our county and the Chesapeake Bay Downstream.

Did you know?

A typical onsite sewage system consists of two components, a septic tank and a soil absorption field (drain-lines). The purpose of the tank is to separate solid materials from liquid waste and breakdown the sewage so that it is more readily absorbed into the soil. This solid material accumulates as a sludge at the bottom of the tank and as a layer scum comprised of grease and lighter substances at the top.

If the sludge and scum are permitted to flow out of the tank and into absorption field, irreversible failure will occur. Repairs would involve expensive replacement of the drain lines. Routine maintenance (pumping at least every 5 years-more if necessary) can save a homeowner thousands of dollars.

Funds For the program are being provided by Chesapeake Bay special targeted watershed funding. The $5000 grant will be administered by the BRWC.

Qualifying Homeowners in the Blue Ridge Watershed are eligible for a one-time$150 reimbursement to assist in covering the cost of septic tank pumping. Funds are available to the first 33 homeowners to return applications beginning May 1, 2013.

Attached you will find a .pdf of the application for participation in the program.
