Join historian Jim Surkamp for a stroll down Wheatland Road and see the old mill, the traveling preacher’s home, a 1900’s one room schoolhouse and some very special homes. Why is Jefferson County the most historic rural county in America? Hint – it gets a big lift from a guy named George - George Washington. Jim’s been unearthing County history for thirty years. He has 310 videos on YouTube, curates the content for civilwarscholars.comwith American Public University ( would you believe 540,000 words, 1000 minutes of video and 10,000 images?) about that era in and around Jefferson. Then come back and enjoy our Community Potluck Dinner – see below. It’s all free but please be sure to sign up on our website – www.wvcraftworks.org - for the potluck!
Program leader: Janet Harrison is a published poet and MFA candidate.

Short biography: Janet Harrison lives in Harpers Ferry, WV, with her husband and two cats. She has studied at the Writer's Center in Bethesda MD for over a decade and through the brief residency program of Spalding University. Her poems have been published in Antietam Review, Sow's Ear Poetry Review, and elsewhere, including three anthologies: the Anthology of Appalachian Writers, Vol. II, Wild Sweet Notes II, and Modern Grimmoire,

Food and Drink: Bring a bag lunch and whatever beverages your require. Please retain all recyclable materials and take them with you when you leave

My late poetry mentor, Sandy Lyne, often remarked that of all the arts, poetry is both portable and cheap. Unfortunately, too many people have also been led to believe that poetry is also esoteric and difficult to understand. While that can be true of SOME poetry, it is most definitely not true of ALL poetry. Poetry can be exciting, illuminating, and just plain fun.

This event is planned for older teens and adults, beginning or experienced poets. Bring poems to share, your own or written by others. This will not be a formal critical workshop, but rather a gentle exploration of poems and what they mean in our lives. I will provide a handout, and give a very brief introduction to some specific forms of poetry. The handout will also include some suggested exercises for those who want to explore further.

Other than poems, please bring a notebook and a pen (for note-taking or in case the muse strikes suddenly). Since it will be summer, bug spray might also be helpful.
