Thanks for the heads up Str1ker! I hadn't even checked the forecast today.
I'll definitely be filling up the tub tomorrow night Lots of weakened tree limbs around here no doubt.

    Right on time.

I just bought a generator on Saturday.

Bring it, mother nature. Bring it.

Way to rub it in! LOL Fortunately for those of us without generators it looks like the temp will be in the 50s.

My wife's former boss gave us a really good one back in the early fall; it's sat in a corner of the grage for six months. Problem is, I haven't figured out how to best install it. It is a pretty big one, and while it won't power the entire house, it will run a far amount. Is this the kind of thing we should actually break down and hire an electrician to install?

Do you have some more info on it? Like what's the make and model number?

My personal opinion is if you're going to feed the unit directly into your house power then you should have a licensed electrician perform the work.

So do you all think a generator is really worth it? What would a cheap one cost, like 500$? Man I can't swing that this winter.

It's all in what you need. A standard one will produce like 3500 watts, and to give you an idea, a space heater on full power runs about 1400 watts. You can get a new one at the Home Depot for like 350 dollars. I try to look for items powered by Briggs and Stratton motors when I get something like a lawnmower, generator, etc...

HOWEVER, I got one at Famous Pawn in Ranson on Saturday. That's the one right next to Anthony's Pizza on Mildred.

It was an unbelievable deal. I saw it there on the sales floor for 149.99 Upon further inspection, I discovered it produces 5000 watts, has a 5 gallon gas tank, AND is powered by a Briggs and Stratton motor. That's like a sunburnt dick - you can't beat it... So I asked the guy to take it outside and start it for us. Well, he did, and it started right up. Lo and behold, it has a muffler on it, so it's like the quietest generator I've ever heard. Needless to say, I happily handed over the 150. I usually try to talk pawn shops down in price on items, but I was pretty happy to pay full price for it.

I'd check them out first. In fact, everything I've bought from Famous Pawn has been exceptional. And the folks there are really nice and friendly!

Cool thanks for the info Chutney! Since I don't plan on moving anytime soon a generator just might be something I'll need. Sounds like a very nice pawn shop! I normally despise those type of shops but there's always exceptions.

We have a special three prong circuit for ours like a washer or dryer outside. Problem is we don't have the huge generator we have nearby when we need it so we usually just stick it out until the power comes back on.

We get by with our woodstove and LED lights; we've been fine so far. We might have to break down and buy a generator eventually though.

Good for you. We just lost a generator, through theft. Someone stole our generator, right out of its shed. It's a big one, a Cummins 5000 BTU; so if anyone knows of someone selling a second-hand generator, but like new (since we never had to use it) of that make, put it on the board please. If no one knows, that's OK because the thief will never really get to appreciate it, since our family believes in cursing thieves, and that one is under a curse.
But anyway, that's my rant. You all keep safe and hopefully no one will have to use a generator.
