Default 2010 Gypsy Moth Survey Results

WVDA has completed the gypsy moth egg mass surveys of Shannondale/RVP/JBF for 2010. They completed 80+ survey plots and did not find any egg masses. This is definitely good news for our area for summer 2011 and there shouldn't be defoliation or tree mortality this coming year from the gypsy moth caterpillars. Thanks again to everyone who contributes towards this effort!!

I'm afraid to ask if the stink bugs (or Emerald Ash Borers) could be eating them all?

Then we'll just have to get pigeons to eat the stinkbugs. And parasitic tree lizards to eat the pigeons. And Chinese needle snakes to eat the lizards...

Thanks Campbell for all the effort you've put into this over the years. I'm sure MOST people are grateful for your dedication to this on-going problem.

Thanks for the kind words! The gypsy moth committee may be a small one but the people on it are very dedicated to preserving our forests and I appreciate each and every one of them. What a lot of people don't know is that the Shannondale Gypsy Moth Committee has been around for years, since the 80's, and long before I joined in 2000. It's really the only committee on the mountain that has sustained time which I find very interesting.
I found this article in the December 1988 edition of the Citizens of Shannondale newsletter which might be of interest to some. Some things are different now and some aren't. Hopefully the "old timers" will chime in!

    "GYPSY MOTH CONTROL
The Ad Hoc Committee for Gypsy Moth Control is working towards
goal to eliminate or control the infestation of Gypsy Moths in the
    Shannondale and neighboring areas.
This committee is comprised of Club members. Citizens of
Shannondale members. assigned Area Leaders and Mountain Men.
    We are
attempting to contact all present and absentee landowners in the
Shannondale area for fiscal aid to fight the impending Gypsy Moth
    problem.
Private property owners are asked to contribute a minimum of
    $30.00 for a small parcel (1/3 or 1/2 acre).
    Contributions and pledges
of $30.00 to $100.00 are being received and deposited in a special
"Gypsy Moth Fund" solely to be used for this purpose.
    No volunteer or
Ad Hoc Committee person receives any compensation for their efforts.
The guiding organization for this project is Citizens of
Shannondale. Inc. They have opened a special account to be used only
for this specified purpose. namely Gypsy Moth Control.
This money is being deposited in a special revolving fun. subject
to audit. which will dispense the necessary funds required from the
controlling Agriculture Department in West Virginia.
    Mr. Yohn. WVU
County Extension Agent is our prime liaison agent.
    He has informed us
that all transactions will be channeled through the Sheriff's
    Department.
The hiring of pilots. the purchasing of chemicals. the
areas to be sprayed according to the most severe infestation. will be
co-ordinated. aw well as the varieties of chemical near the lake. by
the Sheriff's Department of Jefferson County in accord with Mr. Craig
    Yohn.
All residents of Shannondale. as well as land owners. are asked to
donate their fair share towards this endeavor.
    YOU MAY CONTRIBUTE. as
soon as possible. to the Shannondale Gypsy Moth Fund. Route 2. Box 529.
