An interesting concept on a few levels. I mean, if news sites are going to charge for content, they can't possibly expect us to sign up to a dozen different logins to pay for it.?

Well, I don't mind paying reasonably to be entertained and informed. And I understand newspapers are not going to be able to support decent reporters via ads alone - especially when so many block those ads. And the multiple logins are what Cleeg is trying to solve - one login for multiple sites. Makes sense, but I'm not sure larger papers are going to like sharing the revenue.

No, it didn't do that. The main article was available for free. Only the "extra content" was a small extra charge. Again, assuming ad revenue isn't going to pay for quality reporting, I think this may be a good idea.

Micropayments for content are nothing new. The trick is to make it as transparent as possible for the reader. A regional clearing house for payments which gets "charged" with money by the reader is useful. Some of the cloud providers such as iTunes have made a go of this. Separate logon requirements are definitely a hassle.

Print media has been evolving for some time now. Although I had never of Cleeng before seeing it on the Spirit website, it seems to be a logical step in that evolution. One thing that Cleeng needs to do better for the consumer is specify exactly the scope of their contributors. I wandered around their web pages, but couldn't find a link to any list of what publishers are currently Cleeng members. BIG problem, IMO. Why would I want to subscribe to Cleeng if I cannot find out in advance who is providing content through them?
