A Boat for the Lake

My father lives on the lake, but has never been *on* it. I'd love to get him out there during our visit next week.

Is there some place to rent a boat that would hold 4-5 people? Row boat, whatever...

Or maybe someone who could lend me one for a couple of hours on a nice spring day?

webmstr, Lake Shannondale is private property owned by the Mountain Lake Club (MLC). The MLC may have boats you can rent, but I don't know their capacity. I'd suggest you contact them either thru our forum HERE or thru their website HERE

There was a number of reasons that we did not buy a house on that lake.... and BTW, the agents we were working with at the time claimed not to know about the rules Jefferson County imposed with regards to access for property owners that live right on it (10 feet out is what we found out on our own, and at that time, you could not even buy a membership). Sort of a bummer.

Some of the lots extend under water, and you can recreate on/above your own land. But just because your neighbor puts in a [big] pool doesn't mean everyone else has a right to jump in!

I thought pools required that fences be put up around them... for a lot of really good reasons.

And I am not saying the way they have things set up is 100% a bad thing (other folks have the right to love it)... its just not that normal and not something I was willing to agree to with regards to the purchase of property on it. Reasonable usage is fuzzy verbiage for a reason.

Pools do often require fences. But I was trying to make a point - I wasn't trying to imply the much greater regulatory hassle of installing a lake is as easy as surrounding it with a fence and getting a building permit!

Years ago, many people who lived on the lake used it...most had those pontoon boats....never seemed to be an issue...just sayin

Yes, many years ago everyone belonged to the Club and were allowed to use the lake. I remember many happy days fishing there as a pup. But even then non-members were not allowed (obviously guests were).

Only those owning land underwater were allowed to swim in that small part. And as far as I know they still can - it's their land.

Several years ago, an organization tried to form with one of its goals aimed at helping make the lake more accessible to the public. Although the organization did receive some favorable response, it never really got "off its feet" due to multiple reasons, one being stronger objections to that organizations' goal by several residents, and as much as I dislike saying it, most of them were residents living on the lake. This harmed the organization greatly, and now it must close down; and now still, many feel the loss of use of that lake in a more public manner. If this sounds like bitter grapes, so be it. And as Forest Gump says, “That’s all I got to say about that.”

And sadly, it all comes down to money and who gets the hit when the sh** hits the fan. One of the biggest reasons that the club, and any other owners have pushed for the restricted access to THEIR property - yes, the land under the lake, the dam, and the rest of it are owned by the lodge/club. They are also the ones footing the insurance coverage, inspection of the dam, etc. They are the "deep pockets" our litigious society will look to fleece when Johnny or Janey decide to go for that midnight swim or boat ride and tragedy strikes...or even better, when they get ill from the goose poop bacteria overload. At least the membership fees and guest fees help cover the cost of that insurance and rider. It is not that they don't want to share our lovely environment; but they can't foot the total bill without a bit of financial input. And to this day the state has not wanted to assume responsibility of the property because then it ALL becomes their headache - flood plans, dam inspections, health concerns, insurance coverage...

Not sure why the club should feel the need to comment. It really is very simple:

1. The club owns the lake, etc.
2. The club has to pay for all the upkeep, insurance, etc. associated with the lake.
3. The club sells memberships to pay for these things.
4. If someone wants to use the lake then they can buy a membership and use it.

Just because the lake is in Shannondale doesn't mean it belongs to Shannondale. I have a pool on my property in Shannondale and that sure doesn't mean that it belongs to the community. While the lake is much larger, it is the same thing. People need to stop thinking that the lake is somehow anything more than someone elses property and like all property owners they have the right to do what they want with their property (as long as it is legal).

I have never understood why people get upset about not using the lake. If I had wanted to use it I would have paid the membership fee to the business and used it.


To the OP: Maybe you could call/talk to them and see if you can work something out. Maybe they will let you rent a boat for a few hours so your dad can get out there at least once. You may have already done this and they said no, but if not it wouldn't hurt to ask.
