beer in a pie pan works great. It is gross though to see a few dozen slugs floating in your pan.
Since I really don't like beer, sacrificing one to the slugs is not a problem for me.

Is there a way to repel them without killing them?
Building a moat might work? :-)
Crushed sea shells around gardens repel slugs and other gastropods without killing them by making a very uncomfortable barrier that generally speaking they don't care to tread over.

A moat of salt might do the trick as well... not to mention weeds will not grow along that line :-)
Egg shells also work as a barrier, crush them up and sprinkle around pants.

Slugs, like stink bugs, just need to die sometimes.
I sprinkled the diatomaceous earth around my lettuce, they did not care - the barrier must have to be pretty solid for it to eleiminate them entirely. I have noticed, however, that I find much less evil look grub things in the garden that I am pretty certain are (were) Japanese beetle larva. Also the yard does not have as many moles/voles tunnels - that eat grubs - so I'm all for the Diat. earth stuff to move those critters elsewhere for their food source.
I've had people pick up used coffee grounds from me to be used as slug repellant. I didn't hear how it well it worked. Also, to stain a concrete floor.
I read somewhere that used coffee grounds are a good source for biofuel. Apparently there are still enough oils left in the grounds that can be extracted. The extraction is the tough part, I think.
Coffee grounds are also good for absorbing odors and for washing stinky things like onions off your hands.
