Don't know where you work but if its in DC or VA, MD you'll be competing with a ton of govt employees who are released early due to inclement weather--not to mention all the school buses. And for all the winter advice, our area may not get hit with another blizzard or bad snow for a couple of years. This past year we got a snowfall on Halloween---totally out of character for this area and the only really measurable snow for last winter.

So, prepare for the unexpected as that is what will happen.

Don't discount it yet.... I have a friend that traded in a snow cat for one, and then bought a second one!

we went and checked out new Subaru Foresters and Outbacks yesterday. It is amazing how much more room the inside of the Outback had compared to my 2008. We were definitly impressed!

I have a Honda CRV with AWD. It works well in the snow and I do have chains for it for when I need them.

I second the Tacoma. I owned two and miss them both. They were awesome trucks. We had a Subaru Legacy and it was a great car. My wife currently has a Toyota Rav4 and she loves it. It is great in the snow. Especially with good tires. I currently have a 2010 Ram 1500. It is also great in the snow. Also has plenty of room. Yes it has the hemi, but the cylinder shut down system makes the fuel mileage better.

This is good advice, no matter what you end up.

Before moving here, I had a first-model-year CR-V and thought it was one of the best vehicles that I had ever owned. My big mistake with it was "selling" it to my ex-step-son-in-law, who ruined it.

I have purchased two four wheel drives that I have changed the tires on immediately and sold the originals. A tire is not something to skimp on.

Same here except my CR-V was totaled--not my fault. Performed very good in the snow. Have an Element now and it, too, did very well in the two blizzards we had.

I decided to go with the Outback. One of the deciding factors was that it was one of the only vehicles in all the ones mentioned here that offered a manual transmission with AWD. For some reason, however, they do not offer the moon roof or upgraded stereo with the manual version. Getting tougher and tougher to buy a stick these days.

Tacoma offers a 6 speed manual with 4WD, but I wanted an enclosed cargo area.

In regards to Audi, a buddy of mine had a TT and said that thing was phenomenal in the snow. He told me this one story where he made it up some snow covered hill that had defeated a bunch of 4x4's. A little pricey, however, and I want some amount of cargo space.

Thanks to all for your responses!
