WV, VA & MD to Discuss Congestion @ Bridges-Rt 340

This Ought To Be Interesting To Watch
WVDOH to Hold Meeting on US 340 Corridor in Bolivar, WV

Charleston - The West Virginia Department of Transportation, Division of Highways (WVDOH), in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Transportation, the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Hagerstown/Eastern Panhandle Metropolitan Planning Organization will hold an informational public workshop on Thursday, August 16, 2012 at the Bolivar Community Center, 60 Panama Street, Bolivar, West Virginia. The public workshop is concerning the recurring congestion and mobility challenges along the US Route 340 corridor at Harpers Ferry. This will be a planning-level workshop through which WVDOH officials will seek public input regarding operational improvements within and adjacent to the US Route 340 corridor from Washington Street in West Virginia to Maryland State Route 67. Operational improvements include, but are not limited to evaluating the following: traffic signals, carpooling, park and ride locations, and other transit opportunities, etc.

NO FORMAL PRESENTATION WILL BE MADE. The public workshop will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. Information identifying the area of interest and illustrating the purpose and need of the study will be displayed for discussion. Representatives from each State will be available. Verbal and written comments will be accepted during the meeting; written comments are requested by September 17, 2012.

Those wishing to file written comments may send them to Mr. Robert L. Pennington, P. E., Director, Program Planning and Administration Division, West Virginia Division of Highways, Capitol Complex Building 5, 1900 Kanawha Boulevard East, Charleston, West Virginia 25305-0430.

Anyone have some photos of the traffic backups?

Okay, is it just me or is it strange that they want written comments 1 month after the meeting? Wouldn't it be better to have those comments available during the meeting?

Presumably they're going to have more meetings in the future. As long as the money for them lasts, anyway.

But it's probably not going to go anywhere if the best ideas they can come up with are "traffic signals, carpooling, park and ride locations". The only thing that will work is a new 4 lane highway through the pass.

Maybe they want to meet and talk about how to make another 4 lane road that ends in a VA bottleneck like the new Rt. 9 to VA. And how much they can clutter 340 with trashy strip malls and then wonder why traffic stinks. Anyway, if anyone is a masochist, should be a fascinating meeting to attend.

That's why I posted it I've been here over half a century and as I recall, managing traffic on that stretch of road (from Sandy Hook to the Bloomery Rd) was a topic way back in the late 1950s. It will be entertaining and it's a shame that those who have the most interest in the subject will be in the midst of gridlock while the meeting is being held

To be perfectly honest, a widening of this stretch of road will NEVER happen, as the Park Service owns both sides of the road in that entire stretch, with the except of the gas station and the parking lot next to it. There is nothing MD, VA, or WVA can do without any approval for the Dept. of Interior.

I wonder if it might not be feasible (if a bit expensive) to build a bridge to just totally bypass Virginia. (Would suck for the Exxon, granted.) Realign 340 along what's now Sandy Hook Road, jump the river just west of the WV/VA line, and let VA sort out what it wants to do in its own time.

Great idea, but still have to deal with the Park Service. That is going to be the biggest obstacle.

We'll just build it in the dead of night and by the time they find out about it, it'll be done!

I'm for the park service. I hate traffic just as much if not more than the next person, but there is something to the fact that the area at question is one of the very few in our region that has remained relatively untouched by development. There's something to preserving at least one area.

The park service is just another federal agency and they bend to the will of Congress as quickly as anyone. All it takes is one senator that's had enough and they would cave in a New York minute. I mean, it's not like they would have to tear down a bunch of buildings or move the armory to Shepherdstown.

I too hate the thought of a lot of development in the area, but since human expansion is a given, I don't see where there's any choice. It's not doing the area any great good by bottle necking more and more traffic there.

Building a bridge like that would make it safer for hikers.... and they could add a walk through shower section in order to clean up some of them through hikers :-) Might be a great place to sell trail mix as well....
