    I think a deer that perishes from hunting, whether baited or not, is a lot better off than our factory farmed livestock and I don't have as much of a problem with it as I used to. As long as the hunter is proficient so that the deer doesn't die a slow suffering death or escapes with a wound and is left to suffer. I also don't like weapons discharge in a residential area, especially where children live.

    Lets not confuse fat, lazy or irresponsible (what I think we've seen to much of around here) with poor and hungry...
    - I would be very surprised if anyone really cared about the truly poor and hungry feeding there families.
    - Most farmers are even looking for year around help with rodent control.

    Grain and fruit fed deer have to be better tasting then the ones living off something like swamp grass.
    - I really don't think this is much different then farming with herd managment.
    - Over all, something has to be done to help control the populations, and so long as they are getting eaten, who really cares.

    Its the head hunters, shot-em because they are walking while driving around our neighborhood and or the black bag dumpers that a lot of us, with good reason would seem to hate. Try cleaning up the sides of the roads with BRILLO, and you'll quickly find that equal to all the dirty diapers left in the springs area. WTF. I've yet to talk to many hunters, even the ones that have master baited techniques that feel different. Yes, pun was intended.

    I am baiting deer into my yard for the sole purpose of sticking an arrow in them. No I don't consider it hunting, it's exterminating, I do my hunting in the woods where the game is still afraid of humans. But my neighborhood's getting so much deer damage that most of my neighbors have asked me to shoot them. I don't think it'll do much for the image of hunting if a rifle is going off when kids are standing at the bus stop so I'll have to use an arrow. Nothing will be wasted, we eat mostlly deer meat (not venison see note below) for our red meat anyway and I tan the hides for leather. If I get more than we need I know alot of people who'll use it.

    Venison's that stuff you buy in fancy resturaunts that's been farm raised and USDA inspected.

    A deer's stomping isn't always a sign of aggression, they also do it when curious or to communicate. I had a curious doe come within 5 feet of me while see was stomping the ground and sniffing the air trying figure out what I was. I was sitting motionless in the woods and not making eye contact, man did she freak when I looked her in the eyes. Deer, like most wild animals, are flight rather than fight animals. Even a black bear would rather run than deal with a most humans, maybe we should learn from that.

    Off topic warning;
    I'm taking my wife and nephew bear hunting and need to make some room in my freezer, does anyone want a bear hide? I've got one from last year and it's possible we'll get more this year. They're real good for decorating or naked pictures in front of the fireplace. (Some of you SHOULD not post those pictures)

    I had a buck charge me once in my back yard while working on my deck. The stupid thing jumped the fence and got confused when my pug chased him. When I turned around to see what was going on the buck dropped his head and charged me. Luckly I was able to get under deck. The deer then ran and jumped the fence and was gone.

    Carl, I think you could have taken the buck. Plus what a story you'd have to tell.

    I've often thought that hunting should only be allowed on equal terms. To allow humans to go out with massive firepower is totally unfair. Send them out with one good knife - on the theory that they could have made that knife themselves if they had the time. If they aren't clever enough to take down their prey with a knife, then they should be shamed into becoming vegetarians.

    Obviously just a BS thought exercise. But interesting to contemplate.

    I had a doe get between my labrador and two fawns a few months ago in the yard. I had to intervene before the dog got its but kicked. I never seen my dog so scared. LOL Anyhow, I charged the doe and chased them and at one point I could have punched her. She was not afraid at all.

    Tom,

    I agree with the deer damage. My neighbor and I have been wiped out three times this year by them. Our gardens did not stand a chance. I definately would not mind having some deer steaks and summer sausage in the freezer come to think of it.
