Default Does anyone have any contacts with Defense Contractors in North Carolina?

I have a relative who is leaving the Marines Special Forces after I think, 10 years, or so, and is looking for a defense contractor job - not in IT, but another area - such as training or other support services.

I thought I would just put this out here as I know a lot of neighbors work for Defense contractors, but in IT.

In any event, any leads or contacts would be appreciated. He would like to stay in the Lejeune/Jacksonville/Wilmington NC area because he and his spouse have a house in the area.

Try usajobs.gov, this link advertises most if not all of the goverment jobs available.

thank you but they've done that been there (USA jobs that is). They are looking for private sector jobs as the govt. jobs in the area are pretty much for interpreters or psychiatrists - they are neither of those. And it seems jobs on base go to those in the know.

They are looking for Dept. of Defense (primarily) contractor work. Since people up here work for those companies, I was hoping for some lead (even a small one) on any openings in North Carolina.

USAJobs has federal positions. For contractor employment I would watch the Help Wanteds and even check with regional temp agencies (head hunters). Sometimes when a contractor has to fill positions quickly, they will hire through an agency. It is a foot in the door to more permanent employment. This relative needs to design a resume for this purpose and highlight the appropriate training and experience they have. Active security clearances may be a big asset too. They can get cleared for the new employment faster than folks who have had no clearance.

Uhmm he was special forces . . . and has security clearances and resumes lined up, done, applied to temp agencies etc. Done the USA Jobs route and does not want a federal job - why would he - the public and Congress hate us.

Because NC has been hit hard with the recession, jobs are scarce - and as said above, although it was a longshot, I thought someone might know someone who works for a defense contractor that has a facility in NC as well as NoVA or Maryland and may have info on a contact there or a particular project opening up that is NOT technology related.

If I were entering or re-entering the job market, especially as an adult with experience, I would take a project management class or get certified. They need project managers for all aspects of an organization and the training leverages your successful experiences in earlier work.

A footnote to the regional job search -- we have had several contractors who had their residence at some distance to the work site. We had a UNIX guy who commuted from NC for instance. Sometimes they can have a mix of telework and/or a four-day work week with a commute for the long weekends. Some types of work do not lend themselves to this approach but it doesn't hurt to keep an open mind.

Katherine - tell him to get his resume together and start submitting it on-line to contractors such as SAIC, BAE etc. Once he creates an on-line account he can search/apply for positions. If he has any clearances put them in his resume. Don't use USAJobs. I tried it and eventually got interviews after apply directly with contract organization.

    Good luck!
