Thumbs up For Love of Children (FLOC) Reaches Out

    Connecting with nature
A Harpers Ferry group wants everyone to get outside
By Michelle Horst - Journal Staff Writer
MARTINSBURG - Turn off the computer and cellphone and step into nature and connect. The Outdoor Education Center of Harpers Ferry wants the young and older to understand just how important that can be.

Todd McKinney, director of the center, spoke to members of the Berkeley of Commerce of Martinsburg and Berkeley County Friday morning at the Holiday Inn in Martinsburg. McKinney said the mission-based program is currently in Charles Town Middle and Harpers Ferry Middle schools, in addition to holding team-building programs for adults...

...The center offers a mission-based program called Leaders in Action, which is the middle school program. Currently, 30 students are involved in the weekly activities at the two schools. Students are given the opportunity to unplug from their computers and video games and focus on reconnecting with nature and the natural environment, McKinney said....

Sounds kinda dumb. What's the point? They always have the "opportunity" to unplug. But why would they want to? I think it's safe to completely discount the argument about exercise, as they can get just as much or more while still plugged in.

I think "the point" is to remind us (all of us, not just the children) that plugging is a good thing, and use the knowledge advantageously; but the best "cells" in the world is, as our friend Poirot says, "The little gray cells."

My son is involved in the program and really enjoys it. They even offer a 2 week summer camp program. As a family we get outside and do a lot but this gives him a chance to do and learn things that we might not do. I think it's great.
