Discover Downtown Charles Town’s Merchant Pumpkin Carving Contest Winner Announced
Discover Downtown Charles Town (DDCT) is proud to announce the winner of the Merchant Pumpkin Carving Contest. This is the first year of the contest which was designed to create a festive atmosphere for Discover Downtown Charles Town’s Trick or Treat while also engaging downtown merchants in a fun competition. Fifty-five pumpkins were entered into the contest by fifteen businesses and one lucky design was chosen by Trick or Treat visitors as their favorite.
Albert & Arnolds Wine & Cheese won the contest with their expertly carved “Courthouse” design which featured the Jefferson County Courthouse tower, the moon and a spooky creature. Kate and Mike Brown, the owners of Albert & Arnolds, were inspired by the Discover Downtown Charles Town logo and used part of it as the basis for the winning carving. Obviously the design was successful, as it won both the kids and adults categories, with a total of 102 votes, out of the 428 votes that were cast.
The store opened in January of 2007 with the mission of becoming a “community source for exceptional wine, cheese, and gourmet sandwiches.” Kate and Mike focus on providing, “great value wines that are made by small producers who put a lot a care into their winemaking”. What’s their philosophy? Kate says that “wine shouldn’t be intimidating or pretentious” and that Albert and Arnolds is unique because of its customer-driven friendly service. Whether customers are looking for wine, beer, artisanal cheeses, gourmet food items or specialty crafts like wine stoppers and accessories, they can help guide customers to the perfect purchase.
Kate and Mike say they like being part of Downtown Charles Town because of its potential. They hope to see Discover Downtown Charles Town earn a West Virginia Main Street designation and see the city continue its commitment to downtown revitalization. They anticipate these efforts will make Charles Town a “hip” destination, attracting more visitors and repeat business. Albert and Arnolds is doing its part by participating in downtown events such as Third Thursdays, The Charles Town Car Show and the Charles Town Heritage Festival using the celebrations to introduce their products to new and returning customers. On a weekly basis, Albert & Arnolds has wine and cheese tastings on Fridays and Saturdays and offers gourmet lunch-time sandwiches Monday thru Saturday. For special occasions, the staff can make one-of-a-kind gift baskets. For more information on their services visit their website albertandarnolds.com.
