That's floe,as in ice floe, and the Schroders and daughter Joan(got it right) stand atop the ice on the Shenandoah as it accumulated after the spring thaw. In years past the ice buildup has been so severe, particularly on the Big Eddy, that dynamite was used to break the jam.
